Embarking on a cloud journey: An Air Force veterans transition to AWS

Growth and comfort do not coexist.
Ginni Rometty

Today marks the beginning of my venture into the cloud computing sphere, specifically with AWS. As a veteran of the Air Force with a background in aircraft mechanics and quality assurance, the shift from the tangible world of fighter jets to the abstract expanse of cloud computing might seem vast. Yet, the skills and disciplines I've honed over the years are guiding me towards this new horizon. The journey from maintaining F-22s to mastering cloud technology begins now, supported by the love and encouragement of my family.

From Fighter Jets to Front-End Fundamentals

My career started fresh out of high school, immersing me into the fast-paced, intricate world of F-22 aircraft maintenance, and later leading me to a quality assurance role in an F-15 depot. These experiences instilled in me a deep appreciation for precision, efficiency, and the importance of continuous learning and adaptation.

A brief tenure as a State Trooper followed my service, providing a stark contrast to my previous environment and introducing me to new challenges and perspectives. However, my passion for aerospace endured, leading me to Collins Aerospace. Here, I expanded my skill set into network troubleshooting and software issues, laying the groundwork for my interest in IT.

Life’s journey then brought me to Lockheed Martin’s F-22 engineering team, a period marked by professional growth and the personal milestone of becoming a parent. My wife and I are blessed with two wonderful boys, Ezra, who is 6, and Charlie, who is 3. Together, we enjoy simple pleasures like coffee mornings, fishing, and exploring parks and playgrounds. It was during this time that my interest in the IT field, particularly cloud computing and security, began to crystallize.

Diving into Digital

My foray into coding began with HTML/CSS training through FreeCodeCamp, culminating in the creation of a simple website. This experience, though modest, was a significant step towards understanding the vast potential of technology and the opportunities it presents.

Now, as a Quality Assurance Manager in manufacturing, I find myself poised to transition into the IT world. The allure of cloud computing for me lies in its power to democratize access to technology, allowing for scalable, flexible solutions that can transform industries and enhance lives.

Navigating the Cloudscape

The discipline, attention to detail, and resilience I developed in the military and aerospace sectors are invaluable assets as I navigate the complexities of AWS. With training in ITIL, CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+, thanks to ACI learning, I am eager to explore the capabilities of cloud computing—from data security to infrastructure scalability.

As I embark on this journey, I anticipate challenges and opportunities for growth. The field of IT and cloud computing is characterized by rapid evolution and requires an ongoing commitment to learning and adaptation.

I invite you to join me as I share my experiences transitioning into the cloud and IT realm. Together, we will explore the transformative potential of cloud computing and its role in shaping the future of technology.

In closing, this journey reaffirms that the sky is not the limit but the beginning. The transition from airfields to cloud fields represents a new chapter in my lifelong pursuit of knowledge and impact, enriched by the joys and adventures of family life.

Advice? Guidance? Support? Direction? Yes, I will take all of it!
