Mastering Video Hooks with Open Loop Hook

Ever wonder why some tech channels keep you glued to the screen for 20 minutes, while others lose you in 10 seconds? It’s rarely the 4K B-roll or the fancy lighting.

It’s a psychological brain hack called the Open Loop Hook.

An open loop is a storytelling technique where you plant a tantalizing question or high-stakes premise at the very start of your video—and intentionally delay the answer. Human psychology hates unclosed information loops. Once you open one, your viewer’s brain demands closure. That itch keeps them watching, driving your audience retention graph through the roof.

Here’s the simple 3-part framework:

  1. The Setup: Fire off an unexpected claim, mystery, or extreme scenario in the first 5 seconds.
  2. The Hold: Promise the payoff later in the video while delivering your core content.
  3. The Payoff: Deliver on the promise near the end.

Let me show you the difference in practice.

Standard Hook:
"Today we’re reviewing the new M3 MacBook Air and testing its battery life." (Boring. Viewers leave.)

Open Loop Hook:
"This $1,000 laptop actually beat my $4,000 Mac Studio in one critical test—and it’s a feature Apple isn't even advertising. I'll show you that benchmark in a minute, but first, let's look at the redesign."

See what happened? You gave them a reason to stick around for the benchmark, but you still get to deliver your standard review in between.

Another example for software or coding channels:
"I let AI rewrite my entire codebase. It fixed 40 bugs instantly, but it also introduced one massive security flaw that almost got my server hacked. More on that at the end of the video..."

Stop giving away the ending in the first 30 seconds. Plant the mystery, open the loop, and force your viewers to stick around for the payoff.
