Stop searching for unique ideas and start engineering interest in boring ones

Most YouTube "gurus" will tell you that there are no boring ideas, only boring executions. They suggest that if your video isn’t performing, you just need faster pacing, more B-roll, or a more aggressive "MrBeast-style" thumbnail.

This advice is not only exhausting; it is fundamentally wrong.

The Fallacy of the "Educational" Video

In the world of tech content, we often fall into the trap of thinking "value" is enough. We assume that because we are teaching a useful skill—like how to use a new Python library or how to optimize a database—the audience should naturally be interested.

Strategy 2: The "Heresy" Frame

If you want to capture the attention of a technical audience, you need to challenge a "best practice" that everyone takes for granted. Most creators play it safe by agreeing with the consensus. This is a mistake.

When you frame a video as a "heresy," you force the viewer to engage intellectually. They either want to see you prove your point, or they want to see you fail so they can tell you why you’re wrong in the comments. Either way, they are watching.

Strategy 3: Shift from "How-To" to "Why-Not"

Most technical content follows a linear path: Problem → Solution. To make a concept compelling, you should explore the path that everyone else avoids.

Instead of showing the most efficient way to do something, show the most "insane" way to do it. This is often where the most profound learning actually happens.

  • Compelling: "I forced two AI models to review each other's code until one of them gave up."

The "Why-Not" approach taps into the natural curiosity of engineers. We spend our professional lives trying to be "correct." Your content should be the one place where we are allowed to be "interesting."

The "Cost" of a Good Concept

Every compelling video concept requires a "cost."

  1. A Mental Cost: The viewer has to rethink something they thought they knew.
  2. A Risk Cost: The creator might actually fail to achieve the goal set in the intro.
  3. An Effort Cost: The project is clearly more difficult than it needs to be.

If your video idea has no cost, it’s a tutorial. If it has a high cost, it’s a story.

Stop trying to fix your videos in the edit. You cannot fix a lack of tension with a jump cut. Instead, look at your next "boring" idea and ask: "How can I make the outcome of this video uncertain?"

If you can’t fail, the audience won't care when you succeed.
