Ghost in the Machine: Open-Source AI Challenge

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Ghost in the Machine Submission 👻🌼

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine

🎯 The Goal

Create a working project where an open-source or open-weight AI model drives the experience. Your idea should touch on spooky stories, Halloween, Día de los Muertos, remembering loved ones, or old and forgotten technology. The AI can’t be a thin wrapper around a closed, paid API. It has to be a core part of what the project does.

🧰 Ways to Meet the Requirement

Run an open-weight model on your own machine
Use open-source AI frameworks or agent tools
Run inference fully offline, with no internet
Keep personal data private by processing it locally
Fine-tune, customize, or swap models
Bring back an abandoned open-source project or a piece of old internet history

💡 Idea Starters
Phantom Terminal: A haunted command line that makes creepy remarks about what you type and do.
Echoes (Family Memory Keeper): A private app that safely stores family stories, voice recordings, photos, and memories.
Offline Séance Chatbot: A bot that speaks like an old programming language or vintage technology.
Ghost Story Generator: Turns made-up smart-home logs into chilling tales.
Ghost of Code: Revives forgotten programming languages or dead open-source projects.

✅ Things to Keep in Mind
Submit a working prototype, not just an idea.
Make sure the open AI is essential, not decorative.
Test offline mode before claiming it works without internet.
Check the model’s license and hardware requirements.
Provide clear setup steps and a demo.
Be honest about where open models beat closed ones.
