BIOS Update without Windows

Why I decided to update BIOS-

Laptop: HP Laptop 15t dy200
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Laptop Issue:

  1. Windows 11 showed blank screen after logging in.
  2. Ubuntu also shows blank screen after logging in for normal mode (non safe mode). unless panel screen refresh and power saving states are disabled.
Current BIOS Version: F.33
Latest BIOS Version: F.40
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Issue:

BIOS update isn't possible on Ubuntu. You need windows to run the .exe file.
Official Website of HP provides BIOS in an .exe file supported for only Windows OS.

Workaround: Create BIOS USB

Steps:

  1. Create BIOS USB

  2. Download BIOS from official website on a working Windows PC
    [Official Website Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/hp-15-f2000-laptop-pc-series/model/35900329]

  3. Insert a USB in working computer

  4. Click on the .exe file, and follow the instructions and finally click extract to USB and select USB.

  5. BIOS USB created!

  6. Update BIOS directly without OS

  7. Insert BIOS USB in broken PC

  8. Power on, and press Win + B until BIOS recovery screen comes

  9. Follow instructions, select update from USB and update the BIOS.
