I think containers are great, but they have a particular problem that I don't think we should ignore. When you have a homogeneous environment you tend to not see a lot of potential bugs, and you risk getting locked in to a certain set of technology.
When every developer works in a slightly different environment you pick up on a lot of configuration and incompatibility problems. Working out these problems along the way can prevent a lot of grief when it comes to upgrading components.
