Statically catching GGUF parser overflow bugs before you load the model

I'm MV2, of Munim, Inc. Up front: the tool, the corpus and this post were all made with AI.

The short version

GGUF, the model container used by llama.cpp, Ollama, LM Studio and PowerInfer, has no code-execution surface of its own. There is no pickle and no embedded script; nothing "runs" when you open one. But hand-written C/C++ ggml readers and their derivatives have repeatedly turned a malformed header into a heap out-of-bounds write or read through integer overflow.

In every one of these bugs, the triggering values live in the file header: a count, a length, a dimension, an offset. So a static pre-load check can read the header and flag the precursor before any loader touches the file.

The public cluster

Every one of these is already public. Nothing here is a zero-day.

Advisory Where Header field that overflows gguf_scan rule
CVE-2024-21825 llama.cpp GGUF array/string parsing metadata array length GG006
CVE-2024-23496 llama.cpp gguf_fread_str metadata string length GG004
CVE-2024-23605 llama.cpp n_kv handling metadata KV count GG003
CVE-2025-53630 llama.cpp gguf_init_from_file_impl tensor count (size accumulation) GG003
CVE-2026-27940 llama.cpp mem_size, a bypass of the 53630 fix tensor count (size accumulation) GG003
CVE-2026-33298 llama.cpp ggml_nbytes() tensor dimensions GG009
CVE-2026-108955 PowerInfer gguf_init_from_file tensor data offset GG011 (partial)

The PowerInfer case is only partly covered: GG011 flags an unaligned data offset, but full bounds checking of the data region is a documented gap.

What I shipped

Free, in the keras-model-scan repo:

  • gguf_scan.py (the gguf-scan command), Apache-2.0. A standard-library-only header validator. It parses the GGUF header and never loads or executes the model.
  • gguf_cve_map.json and GGUF_CVE_MAP.md, data under CC BY 4.0. As far as I could find, it's the first consolidated, reproducible map of this cluster. It maps each advisory to the header field that overflows, its CWE, and the gguf_scan rule that detects it.
  • gguf_cve_corpus.py, Apache-2.0. Writes the crafted header-only test files.

One line in CI:

gguf-scan ./my-model.gguf --fail-on HIGH
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

To regression-test any GGUF parser, including your own:

python gguf_cve_corpus.py --out-dir DIR
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

That writes one tiny header-only .gguf per row of the map, plus a zero-alignment defense-in-depth case. A bounds-checking reader should reject every one of them.

Honest limits

  • Every bug named here is already public. This is not a zero-day and adds no new vulnerability details.
  • The crafted files are header-only. They hold no tensor data and no exploit payload; they only reproduce the malformed header values.
  • A clean scan guarantees nothing. It means the header passed these specific checks, not that the file or its weights are safe or that your loader is bug-free. Keep your runtime patched.
  • Coverage is header-level only, and the PowerInfer data-offset case is partial.
