OCI - Oracle Linux - sosreport

{ Abhilash Kumar Bhattaram : Follow on LinkedIn }

One of the important aspects of troubleshooting Oracle Linux issues and working with Oracle Support is the use of sosreport.

Most Oracle Linux systems whave built in sosreport , if it is not present , below is the straightforward way to set it up.

# sudo yum install sos
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

A few things to bnote with sosreport that it works the same way for OCI Compute Instances , DB Systems and ExaCS , incases where you are trying to understand the between these there are not any, but there are a few precautions to be aware of

  • sosreport gathers all system information from IP addresses , mac addresses , disk drivers and incase you want that to be obfuscated, you would need to follow this below documentation.

Oracle Linux: How to Obfuscate Sensitive Information in the Compressed sosreport Archive (Doc ID 2850341.1)

sudo yum install soscleaner
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode
  • In most cases these are used to work with Oracle Support to identify any process failures of Linux components , on very busy Linux systems it is preferable to run the sosreport on an temporary directories as below , there is also a part where the MOS SR number can be keyed in for support references
# sosreport --tmp-dir /backup_logs/
...
Please enter your first initial and last name [testvm.orcl.com]: Abhilash Kumar
Please enter the case id that you are generating this report for []: 3-XXXXXXXXX99
...
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Once an sosreport is generated , soscleaner can be used to obfuscate the content

soscleaner can be used to obfuscate the report

# soscleaner /backup_logs/sosreport-<hostname-case#-datestamp-ID>.tar.xz
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

sosreport and soscleaner are lesser known features , the below MOS Doc ID's are useful references for it's usage as most MOS Linux SR's often ask these reports.
