FreelanceFlow: A Privacy-First AI Invoice Assistant Built with Open-Source AI

What I Built

FreelanceFlow is a web app designed to simplify accounting workflows for freelancers by bringing invoice and receipt management, expense tracking, and spending summaries into one workspace.

The Problem

Freelancers often manage invoices, receipts, and expenses across multiple tools. Organizing documents and reviewing spending can take time away from paid work.

FreelanceFlow explores how a single workspace could make these everyday tasks easier.

Key Features

The interface includes:

  • Dashboard: A central overview of the accounting workspace.
  • Document Uploads: A workflow for managing invoices and receipts.
  • AI Extraction: An interface for exploring automated extraction of financial details.
  • Expense Manager: A place to organize business expenses.
  • AI Expense Summary: A workflow for reviewing spending.
  • Export: An interface for exporting financial information.
  • AI Settings: A section designed to explore connecting a self-hosted model endpoint.

Why Open Innovation Matters

Open-source AI gives developers the opportunity to experiment with models they can inspect, run, and customize.

For a financial assistant, local model hosting is especially interesting because invoices and receipts may contain sensitive information. A future local-model workflow could give users greater control over where their data is processed.

FreelanceFlow explores this direction through its AI settings interface. Connecting and testing a self-hosted model end to end is an important next step.

What I Learned

Building FreelanceFlow helped me explore how a focused web interface can bring multiple accounting workflows together.

It also reinforced an important lesson: an AI-oriented interface is not the same as a verified AI integration. Model connectivity, extraction accuracy, and privacy behavior should be tested before making stronger claims.

What's Next?

My next goals are to:

  • Connect and test an open-weight model.
  • Validate invoice and receipt extraction using sample documents.
  • Improve expense categorization and spending summaries.
  • Verify how documents and financial data are handled.
  • Publish the source code in a public repository.

Try FreelanceFlow

I'd love feedback on which accounting workflows would be most useful to freelancers.
