Smart Compression: How ZipFlow Recommends the Best Format

ZipFlow's smart compression engine samples the file mix inside an archive and classifies contents into categories: text documents, source code, images, video, already-compressed media, and binaries. Based on this classification, it recommends a container (ZIP, 7z, TAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.BZ2, TAR.XZ, TAR.ZST), a compression method (deflate, LZMA2, Zstd), and a level (1–9, including Zopfli for ZIP). Every recommendation is tagged with an interoperability label:

★ opens everywhere (Windows, macOS, Office, phones, cloud drives)
◐ needs a newer OS or specific software (e.g., Windows 11 24H2+ for TAR.ZST)
! needs 7-Zip or a compatible tool
The engine also estimates space saving and runtime before any write operation. Add --info to any zf a command to preview the plan without creating a file.

Default strategy: ZIP + Deflate level 9 for maximum compatibility. 7z is offered when size reduction is prioritized, with a warning that the recipient needs 7-Zip.

Example:

zf a project.zip ./src # ZIP, deflate L9, everywhere-compatible
zf a project.7z ./src -f 7z # 7z, LZMA2, smaller but needs 7-Zip
zf a project.zip ./src --info # Preview plan: 80.6% saving, 0s, text-heavy
