When litigation begins or a regulatory investigation opens, organizations face document production deadlines that are set by courts and regulators, not by internal IT schedules. Electronic discovery — the process of identifying, collecting, reviewing, and producing electronically stored information in response to legal requests — requires the ability to locate relevant data across an organization's storage infrastructure quickly, preserve it from deletion or modification, and produce it in formats that comply with legal requirements. The organizations that respond effectively to these demands are those whose storage architecture was designed with information governance in mind. For organizations with centralized NAS storage, the collection process is more straightforward — discovery tools can access a unified file system and apply search criteria to identify potentially relevant documents. For organizations with fragmented storage — different file servers in different locations, departmental shares that were never consolidated, legacy systems that predate the current storage infrastructure — collection becomes an investigation into data geography before it can become a collection exercise.
