What was measured
Every figure here compares one population with itself. An app's written reviews from the 90 days ending at its latest captured review are set against that same app's written reviews from a year or more earlier. Both groups chose to write, so the skew toward the dissatisfied sits on both sides. The lifetime star on the store page counts everyone who tapped, a different population. It is reported here but never subtracted from a written average.
Cohort: 39 Games apps on the US storefront, a curated list, not a chart ranking. Lifetime average 4.61 over 39,822,331 ratings. An app needs at least 50 written reviews on each side to get a figure.

Limits
Re-run at 60 and 120 days, the count of apps past -0.5 is 9/8 and past +0.5 is 8/9; the 90-day figures are reported. No move is tied to a release. The reply split is a heuristic: a reply sharing a templated opening with another reply counts as boilerplate. Review capture runs nightly and missed some nights, so busy apps may have fewer reviews in the store than were written.
