Build a News MCP Server: Connect A News API to Claude and ChatGPT

LLMs lack the ability to provide real-time news updates; a news MCP server can fix this. MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets AI clients call your tools. Claude supports it natively. And ChatGPT supports remote MCP servers through connectors.

The pattern is simple:

  • Wrap a news API in one or two tools.
  • Describe the tools clearly.
  • Let the model decide when to call them.

Any REST news API works. Providers like NewsData.io offer a free tier, which is enough to prototype every idea below.

1. The Headline Fetcher

Start here. Build one tool: get_latest_news(query, country, language).

The model passes filters. Your server calls the API and returns clean JSON.

  • Trim the response to title, source, date, and link.
  • Cap results at 10 to save tokens.
  • Return clear errors on rate limits.

This is your foundation. Every other project builds on it.

2. The Topic Briefing Agent

Ask Claude, “Brief me on semiconductor policy.” It searches, reads, and summarizes.

Add a search_news tool with category and keyword filters. The model can run several searches and merge them.

  • Let the model refine queries on its own.
  • Return snippets, not full articles.
  • Ask for source citations in your prompt.

You get a mini research analyst.

3. The Daily Digest Generator

Turn the server into a morning briefing.

Create a prompt template in MCP called daily_digest. It pulls top stories across your chosen categories and formats them.

  • Store user interests in a config file.
  • Group stories by theme.
  • Keep each summary to two sentences.

Pair it with a scheduler, and you have a personal newsletter.

4. The Brand Monitor

Track mentions of your company without a pricey media tool.

Build a monitor_brand tool that queries your brand name and key product terms. Then ask the model to flag risks.

  • Exclude noisy domains.
  • Track daily volume of mentions.
  • Ask the model to classify tone.

Marketing teams love this one.

5. The Crypto News Tracker

Crypto moves fast, and its news headlines move faster.

Add a tool for crypto-specific news, filtered by coin or keyword. Some APIs, including NewsData.io, provide dedicated crypto endpoints. That saves your filtering work.

  • Query by ticker symbol.
  • Pull the latest 24 hours only.
  • Let the model connect news to price moves.

Combine it with a price API for richer answers.

6. The Market Sentiment Analyzer

Give the model financial headlines. Ask what the mood feels like.

Build a get_market_news tool for companies or sectors. The model scores sentiment and explains why.

  • Fetch headlines for a list of tickers.
  • Request a bullish, neutral, or bearish label.
  • Show the reasoning, not just the score.

Treat it as a research aid, not trading advice.

7. The Multilingual News Reader

News doesn’t exist only in English.

Expose a language parameter in your tool. Claude or ChatGPT can fetch Spanish, German, or Japanese stories and summarize them in your language.

  • Support multiple language codes.
  • Let users compare coverage across regions.
  • Keep original headlines alongside translations.

It’s a great way to escape your filter bubble.

8. The Fact-Checker Helper

Claims spread quickly. Verification is slow.

Build a verify_claim workflow. The model searches several sources for the same story and compares how each reports it.

  • Pull results from different domains.
  • Highlight where sources agree and differ.
  • Flag claims with only one source.

It won’t replace professional fact-checkers. It does speed up the first pass.

9. The Local News Concierge

Global feeds are noisy. Local news is useful.

Add country and region filters, then ask, "What's happening in Lagos this week?" The model handles the rest.

  • Filter by country code.
  • Add a category filter for local relevance.
  • Fall back to broader searches if results are thin.

Travelers and relocators will use this daily.

10. The Historical Research Tool

Sometimes you need old news, not fresh news.

Use an archive endpoint to search past articles by date range. Ask Claude, "How was this topic covered in 2022?"

  • Add from_date and to_date parameters.
  • Paginate large result sets.
  • Let the model build timelines.

Journalists and students get real value here.

Tips Before You Ship

A few lessons apply to all twelve projects:

  • Write tight tool descriptions. Models choose tools based on them.
  • Cache responses. Free API quotas run out fast.
  • Return less data. Fewer tokens mean better answers.
  • Keep keys server-side. Never expose them to the client.
  • Log tool calls. You’ll debug faster.

Wrapping Up

A news MCP server is a small build with a big payoff. One API, a few tools, and your assistant stays current.

Start with project one. Add a tool each weekend. By project twelve, you'll have a serious research stack.
