Trimethylamine Concentrations (30% / 40% / 50%): When to Choose Which

Meta description**: A technical comparison of trimethylamine aqueous solutions at 30%, 40% and 50% — vapour pressure, transport classification, downstream applications and storage implications.

Target platform: Hashnode
Template: C – Comparison (technical depth)
Primary keyword: trimethylamine 30 40 50
Secondary keywords: TMA concentration, TMA solution, trimethylamine aqueous

Trimethylamine (TMA, (CH₃)₃N, CAS 75-50-3 for the anhydrous gas) is a tertiary amine that boils at only 3 °C. As a result, it is almost never traded as a gas in merchant channels. The commercial product is an aqueous solution at 30%, 40% or 50% by weight. Buyers often ask which concentration to specify. The answer depends on vapour pressure, downstream process, transport rules and storage — not simply "higher is better".

Quick Comparison Table

Property TMA 30% TMA 40% TMA 50%
TMA content 30 wt% 40 wt% 50 wt%
Appearance colourless liquid colourless liquid colourless liquid
Approx. density (20 °C) 0.93 g/cm³ 0.88 g/cm³ 0.84 g/cm³
Vapour pressure (20 °C) low moderate high
Odour intensity moderate strong very strong (fishy/ammoniacal)
Typical IMDG class Corrosive 8 Corrosive 8 / flammable 3 subsidiary Flammable 3 / corrosive 8
Primary downstream Water treatment, animal feed additives Choline chloride, dyes, agrochemicals Specialty solvents, organic synthesis

Detailed Differences

1. Vapour Pressure and Safety

TMA is a gas at room temperature. Dissolving it in water reduces but does not eliminate its vapour pressure. As TMA concentration rises, headspace vapour pressure rises sharply:

  • TMA 30% has a relatively low vapour pressure and can be handled with standard ventilation. It is the easiest concentration to store and dispense.
  • TMA 40% is the most commonly traded intermediate concentration. Ventilation and closed transfer are required, but it remains manageable in bulk drums and ISO tanks.
  • TMA 50% approaches the point where headspace can become flammable. It requires pressure-rated or vented tanks, nitrogen blanketing, and careful loading.

For plants without pressure-rated bulk storage, 30% or 40% is the safer operational choice.

2. Downstream Application Fit

  • TMA 30%: Most commonly used in water-treatment chemicals, animal-feed choline formulations, and low-concentration industrial applications where the water content is not a problem.
  • TMA 40%: The workhorse concentration for producing choline chloride (via reaction with ethylene oxide and HCl), dye intermediates, and certain agrochemicals. The 40% balance between active content and manageable vapour pressure makes it the default for these downstream processes.
  • TMA 50%: Preferred by specialty organic-synthesis plants that want minimal water in the reaction and have the pressure-rated equipment to handle the vapour load. It is also used in some solvent and surfactant formulations.

3. Transport and Packaging

  • 30% and 40% are typically shipped in HDPE drums (200 kg) or stainless-steel ISO tanks, classified as corrosive liquids.
  • 50% is more likely to attract a flammable liquid classification because of its headspace, which changes vessel acceptance, packaging rules and freight cost.
  • Drums must be vented or pressure-relief because TMA vapour expands with temperature. Unvented drums can bulge or leak in a shipping container.
  1. Storage and Handling Implications
  • All TMA solutions should be stored in cool, ventilated, flame-rated warehouses.
  • TMA solutions attack copper, zinc and aluminium alloys — use stainless steel, HDPE or cast iron.
  • Drums should be kept sealed; exposure to air both dilutes the product with moisture and releases strong odour.
  • In warmer climates, bulk tanks for 40% and 50% need venting to a scrubber to control TMA emissions.

Which Concentration Should You Choose?

  • Choose 30% if you have limited ventilation, no pressure-rated storage, or your process tolerates high water content.
  • Choose 40% for most downstream choline / dye / agrochemical applications — it is the standard, most readily sourced and best-balanced option.
  • Choose 50% only if your reaction requires minimal water and you have the pressure-rated equipment and vapour recovery to handle it safely.

Practical Note for Buyers

When requesting a quote, always specify:

  • The exact wt% (30 / 40 / 50), not "TMA solution".
  • The allowed water content and residual ammonia / dimethylamine impurity limits.
  • The packaging (drum vs ISO tank) and destination port.
  • Whether you need GHS labels in English / Chinese / destination language.

TMA concentrations are not interchangeable in a formulated process — substituting 50% for 30% without rebalancing water in the reaction can crash yields or overload vent systems.
