Dukaan Helper: A Gemma 4 Product Post Writer for Small Sellers, Built on My Phone

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission 💸

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Week 2

What I Built

Dukaan Helper helps small online sellers write product posts fast. You type the product name and a few details, pick a platform (Instagram, WhatsApp, Meesho, Etsy), a tone and a language (English, Hindi or Hinglish). It writes a title, a short description, four key points, hashtags and a WhatsApp message to send to a customer.

It is for people who sell from home and spend too long writing the same kind of text.

Demo

Try the app here: https://codepen.io/Nirwan-Sharma/full/GgWdBXW

See the code here: https://codepen.io/Nirwan-Sharma/pen/GgWdBXW

You need your own free Google AI Studio API key. The key stays in your browser.

Code

The app is one HTML file, all inside the CodePen. This is the part that talks to the model, including the retry:

const order = [first, second, first, second];
for (let i = 0; i < order.length; i++) {
  try {
    text = await askGemma(order[i]);
    break;
  } catch (e) {
    if (!e.retryable) throw e;
    await new Promise((r) => setTimeout(r, 2500));
  }
}

How I Built It

I am a beginner and I built this on my phone, as one HTML file. It uses Gemma 4, an open-weight model from Google, through a free API key. A dropdown switches between Gemma 4 31B and the lighter 26B. I told the model to use only the details the seller types, so it does not invent prices or materials. I used an AI assistant (Claude) to help write the code.

The hardest part was that Gemma sometimes returned a server error or an empty answer. So the app now retries and swaps between the two models before it gives up.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

A small seller cannot pay for an expensive AI tool every month. Gemma is open-weight, so I could build this on a free key, and later the same model could run on my own computer, where a seller's product details never leave it. For this first version I used Google's hosted API, so the text does go to Google. Being able to swap between two Gemma sizes with one dropdown also showed me how much freedom an open model gives.

My First User

I showed Dukaan Helper to a vegetable vendor. They said it is a good idea, but they cannot pay for it right now.
