If you build or run a small product, support is the job that quietly eats your week. We re-checked 13 AI customer support tools on their own pricing and docs pages this month, and the market looks different than it did a year ago.
1. Free plans moved around
One well-known help desk dropped its public free plan. Another cut its paid prices sharply and added a free tier. If you picked a tool on "it has a free plan" last year, check again.
2. AI is billed three different ways
- Included in the plan: you pay per seat and the AI rides along.
- Allowance or credits: a fixed number of AI conversations or message credits per month.
- Pay per resolution: you pay each time the AI actually answers a customer.
The same answer can cost nothing on one model and real money on another. Know which one you are on before your busiest month.
3. The AI agent is now its own product
Several vendors sell the AI agent separately, so you can put it in front of the inbox you already have instead of migrating. Good for small teams that do not want a rebuild.
4. The handoff matters more than the bot
The best setups let the AI clear the repeat questions and pass everything else to a person with the conversation attached. A bot with no clean exit does more damage than no bot.
5. Channel decides the tool
Website and store questions favor a chat tool with an AI agent. Email-heavy support favors a shared inbox that still reads like a person wrote it. Figure out where your customers reach you first, then compare features.
