This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine
What I Built
NecroCode is an AI-powered repository resurrection tool built for open-source maintainers, developers, and code archeologists. It evaluates abandoned or forgotten GitHub repositories, diagnoses their "cause of death," generates actionable terminal restoration commands, and allows developers to converse directly with the repository's spectral entity in real time.
Inspired by the Ghost in the Machine theme, Halloween, and Día de los Muertos, NecroCode transforms the dry task of software maintenance, dependency debt analysis, and legacy code archeology into an interactive, haunting experience. Instead of sifting through stale commits and broken dependencies alone, you summon the repository's spirit to ask technical questions, debug legacy architecture, and restore abandoned software artifacts back to life.
Demo
⚡ Live Interactive Demo: https://necrocode-gothic-git-6cll.bolt.host
Features at a Glance:
- Spectral Diagnostic Engine: Fetches live repository metadata via GitHub REST APIs to evaluate commit staleness, missing documentation, and dependency debt.
- Resurrection Rituals & Patches: Outputs instant shell commands and code patch previews required to bring the repository into the modern era.
- Interactive Séance Chat: Multi-turn conversational drawer with custom system instructions that maintain dynamic temporal context (calculating real-time staleness from 2026).
Code
NecroCode 👻⚡
NecroCode is an AI-powered diagnostic tool designed to analyze and resurrect abandoned or inactive open-source GitHub repositories. By examining commit histories, dependency graphs, and code snippets, NecroCode summons a spectral AI entity that diagnoses cause of death, generates actionable resurrection rituals, and provides interactive technical guidance.
Built for the Hacktoberfest AI Challenge.
🌟 Key Features
- Spectral Repository Analysis: Evaluates repository staleness, commit timestamps, and dependency state using authenticated GitHub API calls.
-

How I Built It
NecroCode is engineered with open-weight intelligence at its core:
-
Open-Weight AI Intelligence: Powered by
openai/gpt-oss-120brunning via the Groq SDK for ultra-fast, open-weight inferences compliant with Hacktoberfest standards. -
Frontend Architecture: Built with React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS, utilizing
react-markdownandremark-gfmto cleanly render complex markdown tables, code syntax blocks, and list items inside the Séance Chat. -
Data Integration: Directly interfaces with the GitHub REST API (
GITHUB_TOKEN) to pull commit dates, tree structures, and metadata. - Mobile-First Engineering: Developed, tested, configured, and deployed completely from a mobile device using Termux (Linux CLI environment) and Git.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation and open-weight models ensure that critical tools for software preservation and code archeology remain accessible, transparent, and un-siloed.
Relying on proprietary, closed-door AI APIs creates a single point of failure: if a provider changes pricing, alters context constraints, or deprecates an API version, legacy analysis tools break. By running open-weight models like openai/gpt-oss-120b, NecroCode ensures that software restoration workflows remain inspectable, customizable, and capable of running anywhere—from edge environments to local developer machines without internet dependency.
In AI it matters because it prevents developer dependency on unpredictable corporate roadmaps.
