Web 2.0 and Web 3.0, How are they Different? A Summary

From the evolution of the Static Web 1.0 to the interactive Web 2.0 and now we are witnessing that of Web 2.0 to Web 3.0. But wait! How is Web 3.0 any different from Web 2.0 and why is everyone so excited about it?

Web 2.0
Web 2 is interesting and we can already do so much with it, yeah! But Web 1 was also seen as interesting and very helpful before the evolution of Web 2 and the same thing is about to happen again. Everyone enjoys the fact that they can do so much with web 2 from collaboration, interaction with web content, eCommerce, content creation to social media and so much more, but this comes at the expense of giving up control of personal data to centralized institutions like Google and Facebook. This is exactly what Web 3 with blockchain is here to put in check.

Web 3.0
Web 3 is majorly about decentralization, which is enjoying all these features of web 2 and even more without entrusting personal data to anyone. Web 3 focuses on the semantic web whose goal is to make internet data machine-readable.

Major Differences Between Web 2 and Web 3

  • Web 2 gives users the ability to interact with internet content while Web 3 allows users to become active contributors to the contents on the internet, thereby allowing them to immerse themselves in it.

  • Data is owned by the network in Web 2. Web 3, on the other hand, implies an entity's ownership of data as well as the ability to share data across the network.

  • Web 2 brings about improved interactivity while also introducing a diverse set of web apps. Furthermore, it is reliant on interactive advertising. Web 3, on the other hand, is built on behavioural marketing and includes intelligent web-based features and applications.

There is so much to Web 3, more to be discovered about it and this is just a glimpse of all there is to Web 3. The concept is relatively new and will keep growing.
