Since 2010, Instagram has catapulted to over 2.3 billion users. It’s one of the top social networking platforms, headed by Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp (in that order). It’s going to improve more with added features and enhanced algorithms.
On the content creation side, Instagram is a vital platform to build your fanbase, make connections, and find work. If you’re a model or want to be a model, I suggest starting your portfolio on Instagram since many top modeling agencies require their models to be on these social media sites. Use it to your advantage and be competitive. But before that let’s define what’s an Instagram model.
Instagram Model
There are a few types of models out there and one is an Instagram model. Instagram models are someone who posts pictures/videos on the platform. They have a high amount of followers and brands hire them to promote products because they have notable influence and a big shot to boost sales.
Moreover, many models have profiles all over the Internet but IG focuses on images, making it a specific platform to flaunt your beauty and fashion. These IG models create a certain vibe based on a theme— check out
Karlie Kloss, Miranda Kerr, and Naomi Campbell’s timeline and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
How do these models make money?
Sponsored Posts
One of the most common ways these models make money is through sponsored posts and/or Instagram stories. So basically, brands reach out to them (or vice versa) and discuss the price for every sponsored post. These brands purchase multiple posts, videos, or stories at a time. Sometimes they negotiate the rates depending on the package and their budget. If both sides agree on the amount, the model will now post the product that the brand wants to be promoted. There are strict guidelines set by these brands as to what these models can say in the post, after posting, the brand then pays the influencer.
Brand Ambassadors
Instagram models earn money by becoming brand ambassadors. It’s like a sponsored post but the longevity of the relationship between the model and brand is longer. A brand ambassador partners with a brand for a fixed time (most brands prefer to hire an ambassador for 6 months or 1 year) and they will become the face of the brand. They market the product/s to their audience consistently: regular posting, IG story mentions, brand events, and live streams.
In addition, these brands pick someone who has a strong following so their investment won’t go to waste. Depending on the brand and how large the audience is, these Instagram models may get paid with a fixed amount of money, commissions, and/or free products.
Affiliate Marketing
Instagram models today use affiliate marketing to earn money. They just talk about the products that they love and get paid for them. So basically, affiliate marketing involves referring to a product or service by sharing it on a site, blog, or across social media platforms. After that, the model earns a commission every time someone makes a purchase through the unique link associated with their endorsement.
Follow these steps to become an Instagram model:
Define your style:
as a model, you need to know your style and explore around it. Instagram is now the front page of you as a model so whether you love high fashion brands or streetwear, define your personal style and let your IG profile scream it.Figure out your vibe:
your followers like you because they resonate something with you. Whether it’s your personality, your profile aesthetic, or your day-to-day posts on your timeline, it's important to build a tribe within these areas.Create an interesting bio:
when you follow someone on social media, it’s an impulse to check their bio, right? So if you want to become a model, create an interesting bio that will make people follow your account.Use hashtags:
hashtags are the key to opening doors on the Internet. It will help you get attention and followers for your modeling career. If you’re just starting your profile, use hashtags wisely. Don’t compete with larger accounts and avoid using trendy hashtags like #model, #instamodels, and #modellife, because you’ll get stuck behind their accounts. I’m not saying you should not use those hashtags but I’m suggesting you use more specific tags– like #handmodel, #cosplaymodel– or anything that has less competition.Plan your posts:
posting professional modeling photos helps you attract a brand and your potential followers. You can include the behind-the-scenes images/videos to make it more relatable. Since Instagram has different features, you can post reels, photos, stories, and videos. Through these, it doesn’t limit what type of content you’re gonna post in a day.Engage with your audience:
ask for opinions or suggestions on your next hair color, ask them about their favorite shampoo, anything that will create an interaction between you and your followers is great.
