What Makes Healthcare Machine Learning Different from Other ML Projects

Most machine learning tutorials focus on relatively clean datasets.

Predict house prices.
Classify images.
Detect spam emails.

Healthcare machine learning projects are very different.

Healthcare datasets are among the most complex and messy forms of data available to data scientists.

They combine structured and unstructured information, multiple data sources, and long clinical timelines.

Some examples include:

• Electronic health records
• Laboratory test results
• Medication histories
• Clinical notes
• Imaging data
• Operational hospital records

Beyond technical complexity, healthcare datasets are deeply influenced by clinical workflows.

This means that the data often reflects how healthcare professionals interact with the healthcare system.

For example, when a patient appears in multiple diagnostic tests within a short period, that pattern may indicate clinical concern rather than disease severity itself.

Machine learning models that fail to account for these dynamics may produce predictions that look accurate during training but perform poorly in real clinical environments.

Developing reliable healthcare AI therefore requires more than technical machine learning skills.

It requires understanding how healthcare systems generate data and how clinicians interpret that information.

My work focuses on this intersection between healthcare systems and data science.

With twelve years of pharmacy practice combined with training in public health and data science, I explore how machine learning models can be designed to support real-world healthcare decision-making.

Healthcare AI has enormous potential to improve patient outcomes, but only if we approach the data with the right understanding.

Technical accuracy alone is not enough.

Context matters.
