In healthcare, however, one of the most critical factors is how the data itself is generated.
Healthcare datasets are shaped by clinical decisions, hospital workflows, documentation practices, and patient care processes.
For example, when a physician orders a diagnostic test, that action already reflects clinical reasoning. When a test is not ordered, that absence may also represent a judgment about patient risk or necessity.
Understanding these patterns is essential when building models intended to support healthcare decision-making.

In healthcare machine learning, missing values are frequently informative rather than random.
A missing laboratory test may indicate that a clinician did not consider the test necessary, and this absence can itself become a signal that models learn from.
Before moving into health data science, I spent 12 years practicing pharmacy in both community and hospital environments. That experience shaped how I approach healthcare data — not simply as numbers, but as reflections of real clinical decisions.
