gmail inbox lockin and how to escape

i admit i have been using the gmail webmail inbox interface for the last few years but i cant forward multiple emails in one email and i cant work out how to turn off the awful collapsed folder view on my @gmail account (luckily they havent rolled out the collapsed folder view on my @mygoogapp accounts yet but im sure its only a matter of time) and since it ISNT opensource I cant hack it

so im now in the market for a new email / webmail client but i dont need a groupware solution such as Horde or Zimbra but thanks to a recent article on https://opensource.com/alternatives/gmail i have just come across Mailpile

is anyone else using Mailpile or is there a great node email / webmail client that you can recommend ?
