But home Internet is asymmetrical. Getting in the way of me hosting my own site is:

  1. ISPs give poor upload speeds.
  2. I would need an always on, home computer to serve my pages.
  3. How to handle traffic surges?

But I do like the idea of self hosting, and being able to get at the data.

Hosting from your home/server is kind of an ultimate self-dependency strategy but what we're talking about here is more about 'host anywhere' but maintain a higher level of control and alignment of interests with the hosting/service provider.

Thanks. I guess the other thing to worry about is replication, for an international site that you don't want to be held hostage by any one government.
