ACH Return Codes Explained: R01, R03, R10 & How to Handle Them in Production
When an ACH transfer fails, your payout system receives a return code. Understanding what each code means—and how to programmatically handle it—is critical to building reliable payment flows. This guide covers the most common Nacha R-codes you'll encounter and the logic you need to implement.
What is an ACH Return Code?
An ACH return occurs when a bank rejects a debit entry. The originating depository financial institution (ODFI) receives a return file, typically 1–2 business days after the initial ACH file was submitted. Each return includes a code (R01–R85) that tells you why the transfer failed.
The difference between a return code and a rejection is timing: rejections happen before the ACH file is processed; returns happen after the bank attempts to debit the account.
The Most Common Return Codes
R01: Insufficient Funds
What it means: The account doesn't have enough money to cover the debit.
When it fires: During the bank's posting window, typically overnight or early morning.
How to handle it:
if (returnCode === 'R01') {
// Mark entry as failed due to insufficient funds
await updatePayoutStatus(payoutId, 'FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_FUNDS');
// Notify the recipient (they need to fund their account)
await notifyRecipient(recipientId, 'Payout failed: insufficient funds');
// Optionally retry after a delay (e.g., 3–5 business days)
await scheduleRetry(payoutId, 5); // days
}
This is a temporary failure. The recipient can fund their account and you can retry. Set a retry window (typically 3–5 business days) and track attempts.
R03: No Account / Invalid Account Number
What it means: The account number doesn't exist, or it's been closed.
When it fires: During validation, before or shortly after posting.
How to handle it:
if (returnCode === 'R03') {
// This is permanent; don't retry
await updatePayoutStatus(payoutId, 'FAILED_INVALID_ACCOUNT');
// Flag the recipient's bank account record
await markAccountInvalid(recipientId, accountNumber);
// Notify recipient to provide a valid account
await notifyRecipient(recipientId, 'Account not found. Please update your bank details.');
// Block further payouts to this account until updated
await blockFuturePayouts(recipientId);
}
This is permanent. Don't retry the same account. Ask the recipient to re-verify their banking details.
R10: Unauthorized
What it means: The account holder (or their bank) has flagged the transaction as unauthorized or disputed it.
When it fires: 1–5 business days after posting, sometimes later if the account holder files a dispute.
How to handle it:
if (returnCode === 'R10') {
// Mark as disputed
await updatePayoutStatus(payoutId, 'DISPUTED');
// Log for investigation
await logDispute(payoutId, returnCode, receivedDate);
// Contact recipient to verify
await notifyRecipient(recipientId,
'Your payout was marked unauthorized. Please confirm with your bank.');
// Escalate to support team
await escalateToSupport(payoutId);
}
R10 disputes require manual investigation. Don't auto-retry; wait for the recipient to resolve with their bank.
Building a Return Handler
Here's a minimal pattern for production:
javascript
async function handleACHReturn(returnCode, payoutId, recipientId) {
const permanentCodes = ['R03', 'R04', 'R16']; // no account, closed account, etc.
const disputeCodes = ['R10', 'R29'];
const retryableCodes = ['R01', 'R09']; // insufficient funds, unclaimed funds
if (permanentCodes.includes(returnCode)) {
await updatePayoutStatus(payoutId, 'FAILED_PERMANENT');
await markAccountInvalid(recipientId);
} else if (disputeCodes.includes(returnCode)) {
await updatePayoutStatus(payoutId, 'DISPUTED');
await escalateToSupport(payoutId);
} else if (retryableCodes.includes(returnCode)) {
await updatePayoutStatus(payoutId, 'PENDING_RETRY');
await scheduleRetry(payoutId, 5); // retry in 5 days
} else {
await updatePayoutStatus(payoutId, 'FAILED_OTHER');
await logUnknownReturn(payoutId
