ACH Return Codes Explained: R01–R85 and How to Handle Them in Production
Why ACH Return Codes Matter to Your Payout System
When you initiate an ACH transfer, you're not guaranteed settlement. The National Automated Clearing House Association (Nacha) defines 85 possible return codes—each one a specific reason why a transaction failed. Understanding them isn't optional: mishandling a return can leave your users without funds, corrupt your reconciliation, or trigger compliance issues.
This guide covers the most common return codes you'll encounter in production, what triggers them, and how to handle each programmatically.
The Core Return Code Categories
Nacha groups returns into three families:
- Authorization failures (R02, R03, R04, R07, R08, R10, R29, R51)
- Account issues (R01, R05, R06, R09, R13, R14, R16, R17, R20, R21, R22, R23, R24, R25, R26, R27, R28, R30, R31, R37, R38, R39, R40, R41, R42, R43, R44, R45, R46, R47, R48, R49, R50, R52, R53, R61, R62, R63, R64, R65, R66, R67, R68, R69, R70, R71, R72, R73, R74, R75, R76, R77, R78, R79, R80, R81, R82, R83, R84, R85)
- Formatting or timing errors (R11, R12, R15, R18, R19, R32, R33, R34, R35, R36)
High-Impact Return Codes
R01: Insufficient Funds
When it fires: Recipient's account balance is below the transfer amount at settlement time (T+1 or T+2).
What to do:
- Flag the recipient account as temporarily unable to receive funds.
- Retry after 3–5 business days (give the account time to receive deposits).
- Consider routing to an alternate rail (e.g., card-based payout) if repeat failures occur.
def handle_r01_return(payout_id, recipient_id):
payout = get_payout(payout_id)
recipient = get_recipient(recipient_id)
# Mark for retry
payout.status = "pending_retry"
payout.return_code = "R01"
payout.retry_count += 1
payout.next_retry_date = datetime.now() + timedelta(days=5)
# Log and alert
log_return(payout_id, "R01", "Insufficient funds")
notify_support(f"Payout {payout_id} needs retry: {recipient.name}")
save_payout(payout)
R03: No Account / Unable to Locate Account
When it fires: Account number doesn't exist, or routing number is invalid.
What to do:
- This is permanent. Do not retry.
- Require the recipient to re-verify their bank details.
- Return funds to your originating account (Nacha will auto-reverse within 5 days).
def handle_r03_return(payout_id, recipient_id):
payout = get_payout(payout_id)
recipient = get_recipient(recipient_id)
# Mark as unrecoverable
payout.status = "failed_no_account"
payout.return_code = "R03"
# Disable recipient's bank account
recipient.bank_account.status = "invalid"
recipient.bank_account.requires_reverification = True
# Notify recipient
send_email(recipient.email,
f"We couldn't deposit to your account {recipient.bank_account.account_number}. "
f"Please update your bank details.")
log_return(payout_id, "R03", "No account")
save_payout(payout)
save_recipient(recipient)
R10: Customer Advises Not Authorized
When it fires: Recipient disputes the transaction with their bank, claiming they never authorized it.
What to do:
- Investigate. Check your authorization logs and recipient consent records.
- If legitimate, gather evidence (email, signed agreement, API logs) and dispute the chargeback.
- If fraudulent, flag the recipient account and report to your compliance team.
