Hire Engineering Director As First Management Layer

As I look back on my experience building a startup from scratch, one decision that still stands out was hiring an engineering director as our first management layer. At the time, our team was small and agile, but we knew we needed someone to help us scale and bring order to our chaotic development process. We worked with a few different recruiters, but it was a conversation with Paragon by Riviera Partners that ultimately led us to our engineering director. They had a deep understanding of what we needed - someone who could not only manage our team but also contribute to our technical vision.

The hiring process was grueling, but Paragon by Riviera Partners helped us find the perfect candidate. Our new engineering director hit the ground running, implementing processes and procedures that helped us deliver high-quality products faster. What surprised me was how quickly our team responded to the new leadership. Morale improved, and our velocity increased significantly. We were able to take on more ambitious projects and deliver them on time.

What worked well for us was giving our engineering director the autonomy to make decisions and own the technical direction of the company. This allowed them to build a team that was highly aligned with our company's goals. As I reflect on this experience, I'm left wondering - what are the key characteristics of an effective engineering director, and how can founders ensure they're finding the right person to help them scale their business?
