Asaaju Peter, CEO of Phemight Technologies, has expressed strong criticism of PayPal’s recent moves to resume operations in Nigeria and across Africa. According to Peter, the company’s long-standing unexplained ban in the region followed by its current efforts to re-establish itself is “disgusting” and shows a disregard for African freelancers.
Peter highlighted that PayPal’s history in Nigeria has been marked by restrictions that hindered freelancers, digital entrepreneurs, and online businesses from accessing global payment solutions. “After so many years of shutting out African freelancers without clear justification, now they want their way back. This is not good business practice—it is pure injustice to the hardworking tech community in Africa,” he stated.
He also emphasized the importance of local and global alternatives for African digital workers. “Freelancers and small businesses in Africa deserve platforms that respect them, provide transparency, and do not exploit or block them unfairly,” said Peter.
Phemight Technologies continues to advocate for fair opportunities for African tech professionals while encouraging the adoption of secure, accessible payment systems that empower local talent rather than restrict it.
