Claude native Apple Health vs the on-device MCP path
Anthropic shipped native Apple Health support for Claude in January 2026, the first big AI platform to pull HealthKit into a cloud model. It is genuinely useful, and the trade-off is the part most write-ups skip.
What actually happens is a cloud round-trip. Your HealthKit data moves from your iPhone to Anthropic's servers, where the model reads it, and every follow-up question is another round-trip. You are handing a second company, on top of Apple, a running copy of your most personal measurements.
The alternative is an on-device model that answers on your phone with no upload and shows the numbers it used, plus a zero-dependency MCP server that lets any agent you run read the same data from a folder you control. 190 metrics, 14 read-only tools, and the data never transits the server author's infrastructure.
The honest split:
- Convenience and one assistant doing the reading: Claude's native connector.
- Same privacy as Apple Health, plus any MCP client you want: the on-device export plus MCP server.
Both answer the question. Only one leaves your data where it started.
