Information Architecture is the way you structure contents on your mobile app or website that makes it easier for users to navigate through the app, making it simple to understand and intuitive for the users.
In other words lA is likened to the blueprints of a building. It serves as a guide to all stakeholders involved and working on the building.
When designing your information Architecture, there are two things to consider.
- Is it easy to understand and navigate?
- Can it be improved on i.e new features be added to it in the near future?
Before you start creating an IA,
You need to know the elements it will consist of. You can start by writing a list of all the elements that are supposed to be contained in the app and group similar items together according to hierarchy
Take into consideration your wireframes because they are used to visually present your IA to stakeholders and developers for easy understanding. You can use them to visualize how a certain screen or page will look like.
Always keep it simple and straight to the point. You don't want to overload your users with too many information at once.
Prioritize the contents on the app. You have to determine which contents you want closer to your users. You do not want your users to navigate to the log out page from the welcome page/home page.
Rely on user feedback through user testing to determine how user-friendly your IA is and how it can be improved for better user experience.
Always review your information Architecture regularly for possible improvements to keep up with lastest trends and user preferences. Take for example button and bulky phones are becoming a thing of the past and many mobile phone companies are embracing the new trend.
Don't forget the way you organize your app's contents is one of main factors in the success of your app. The importance of Information Architecture can not be overemphasized.
Always remember to keep it simple, clear and easy to understand for optimum user experience and to serve as a guide to developers and stakeholders.
