Internal links are site architecture, not SEO garnish
Internal links tell visitors what to read next and tell search engines which pages are central. A page with no links pointing to it may as well not exist, however good it is.
Links in body copy carry more weight than a list in a footer. They work because a reader is already engaged, and because the surrounding text explains what the linked page is about.
Implementation notes
Link from body copy, not only navigation. Menus help, but they do not replace a relevant link inside a paragraph that answers the next question.
One clear link beats a cluster. If a paragraph links to five pages, none of them stands out. Pick the single next step that makes sense.
Fix common failures first. Orphan pages, broken links and pages that only link back to the homepage are the usual suspects. A site crawl will surface them quickly.
Make it a publishing rule. Every new post or service page should link to at least one related service page and one related article. That habit, kept up, is what turns a site into a network.
