Java is a high-level programming language used for enterprise applications, web development, web applications, mobile applications, and many more. It is secure, scalable, and platform-independent.

We can run Java across many Operating Systems like Linux and macOS. How is this possible? It is possible because of the JVM (Java Virtual Machine), which executes bytecode, and the JDK (Java Development Kit), which gives us the tools to build it.

1. JDK (Java Development Kit) — The Superset

JDK is the top-level package. It consists of the JRE plus development tools.

  • What is inside: JVM + JRE + Development Tools (like the compiler javac and debuggers).
  • Role: It gives us everything needed to both write, compile, and run Java code.

2. JRE (Java Runtime Environment) — The Environment

JRE is the runtime environment that allows Java programs to run.

  • What is inside: JVM + Standard Class Libraries.
  • Role: It provides the environment and libraries to run compiled Java code (Development tools like javac belong to the JDK above it).

3. JVM (Java Virtual Machine) — The Translator

JVM is the engine that converts Java bytecode into machine code so the operating system can understand it.

  • Role: Translates human-written code (compiled into .class bytecode files) into machine code.
  • Why Java is Platform Independent: You write code in a .java file, the JDK compiler (javac) converts it to a .class bytecode file, and the JVM translates that bytecode for your specific OS (Windows, Mac, or Linux).
