This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine
What I Built
Ghost in the Stream is an open-weight, real-time telemetry and anomaly monitoring system designed to run entirely locally. Inspired by the "Ghost in the Machine" theme—the idea of invisible patterns, hidden signals, and anomalies lurking inside raw machine streams—it continuously consumes streaming log data to detect irregular system signatures, out-of-bounds telemetry spikes, and hidden behavioral anomalies before failures occur.
How I Built It
Inference & Modeling: Powered by open-source ML/AI frameworks including Scikit-learn (Isolation Forests for real-time unsupervised anomaly detection) and PyTorch / Hugging Face open-weight lightweight transformers for natural language log classification.
Data Pipeline: Built using Apache Kafka / Python stream producers feeding events directly into a high-throughput FastAPI backend.
User Interface: Integrated a lightweight Streamlit dashboard to visually map incoming telemetry signals, highlight anomalous spikes, and render diagnostic traces in real time.
Deployment: Configured to run locally inside Docker containers without requiring external API dependencies or cloud-hosted endpoints.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation and open-weight models give developers complete ownership and transparency over system-level telemetry. Closed APIs create data privacy risks when streaming internal logs, introduce network latency, and lock developers into proprietary usage costs. Building with open-source tools allows monitoring systems to run completely offline, with absolute data privacy and zero vendor lock-in—keeping the lights on even when the internet is cut off.
