FastAPI Explained: Python APIs at Full Speed

Introduction

Python (covered earlier) is beloved for readability, but its classic web framework Flask (the batch 18 post) was built for websites, not APIs, and leaves validation and documentation to you. FastAPI, released in 2018, is built for APIs from the ground up: declare your endpoints with Python type hints, and it validates requests, serialises responses, and generates interactive API documentation automatically. It is one of the fastest-growing Python frameworks for a reason — it removes the tedious parts of API work.

Type hints, validation, and automatic docs

FastAPI's core trick is turning Python's type hints into behaviour:

  • Typed endpoints — declare a function parameter as item_id: int and FastAPI rejects non-integer values with a clear error, before your code runs.
  • Pydantic models — define request/response shapes as classes, and FastAPI validates incoming JSON against them, converts types, and documents the schema.
  • Automatic docs — every endpoint appears in interactive Swagger UI and ReDoc documentation at /docs and /redoc, generated from your code, with no extra writing.
  • Async by default — endpoints can be async def, so the server handles many concurrent requests efficiently, which is part of why FastAPI benchmarks near Node and Go speeds for I/O-heavy APIs.

A minimal endpoint shows the pattern — a typed function, and FastAPI handles the rest:

from fastapi import FastAPI
app = FastAPI()
@app.get("/items/{item_id}")
def read_item(item_id: int):
    return {"item_id": item_id}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Visit /docs and that endpoint is already documented and testable in the browser. No separate OpenAPI file, no manual validation code.

The honest trade

FastAPI's trade is scope: it is an API framework, not a full-stack one — no built-in templating, auth system, or admin panel like Django (the batch 11 post). Its async model also demands care: blocking calls inside async endpoints stall the server, a common beginner trap. And its ecosystem, while large, is younger than Django's. The rule of thumb: FastAPI when you need a fast, typed, well-documented API; Django when you need the full batteries-included web framework.

Takeaway

FastAPI is Python APIs at full speed: type hints become validation, Pydantic models become schemas, and documentation generates itself. It trades full-stack breadth for API focus — and for API work, that focus is exactly the point.
