Afterlight: Some Stories Deserve to Stay 🌼

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Ghost in the Machine Submission 👻🌼

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge — Week 4: Ghost in the Machine 👻

What if we could preserve more than just photographs?

A person's favourite song, the way they used to tell stories, a conversation we never want to forget, or the little things that made them special.

These moments may seem ordinary, but sometimes they become our most valuable memories.

That's the inspiration behind Afterlight.

I wanted to build a digital space where people can preserve meaningful memories, personal stories, and the little details they don't want time to take away.

This idea also connects with this week's theme, Ghost in the Machine. I interpret it as the traces people leave behind — their stories, experiences, and memories that continue to live on even after a moment has passed.

💡 What I Built

Afterlight is a digital memory journal designed to help people preserve meaningful moments, personal stories, and details about the people who matter to them.

Currently, users can:

  • Create and save personal memories.
  • Add the name of the person associated with a memory.
  • Describe their relationship with that person.
  • Write detailed personal stories.
  • Preserve favourite things, such as songs, food, places, and habits.
  • Associate dates with memories.
  • View, edit, and delete saved memories.
  • Store memories persistently in MongoDB, so they remain available even after refreshing the application.

I also focused on the visual experience to make Afterlight feel more like a personal journal than a traditional CRUD dashboard.

The goal is simple: make remembering feel natural, comfortable, and personal.

🛠️ How I Built It

I wanted to use a modern technology stack while keeping the architecture simple, maintainable, and flexible enough to evolve.

The current technology stack includes:

  • Angular — Frontend application, standalone components, routing, and signals.
  • Angular SSR — Server-side rendering.
  • Tailwind CSS — Responsive styling and UI design.
  • Node.js — Application runtime and server environment.
  • Express.js — REST API integrated into the Node.js SSR server.
  • MongoDB Atlas — Persistent storage for memories.
  • Mongoose — MongoDB schemas and database operations.
  • Vercel — Application deployment and hosting.

I chose this architecture to keep the frontend and backend API within a single application rather than maintaining separate frontend and backend projects.

This makes the application easier to manage while leaving room for future improvements.

🤖 Open-Source AI

For this project, I experimented with the Gamma AI model as part of my exploration of AI-powered storytelling.

My intended direction for AI in Afterlight is to help people organise, explore, and reflect on their memories without replacing their original stories or changing their meaning.

I want AI to support the storytelling experience, not take ownership of someone's memories.

The human story should always remain at the centre.

🌍 Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

For a product like Afterlight, personal data and trust matter enormously.

Open-weight AI models create opportunities to experiment with different models, understand how they work, adapt them to specific requirements, and gain more control over how AI features are deployed.

I believe this flexibility is particularly important when building applications around personal stories and meaningful information.

I also want to explore AI in a way that respects the user's original memories and keeps them at the centre of the experience.

❤️ The Spirit of Afterlight

We cannot bring back every moment.

We cannot replay every conversation or remember every little detail forever.

But we can preserve the stories that matter.

Afterlight is built around one simple thought:

Some people leave memories. Some moments leave stories. And some stories deserve a place to stay.

Built with care for Hacktoberfest 2026 — Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.
