LIFELENS OUTDOOR

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

What I Built

LifeLens Outdoor is an AI-powered outdoor companion that uses open-weight AI to identify plants, birds, trees, flowers, and other things people encounter while exploring. Users simply point their camera at something interesting, and LifeLens provides a quick identification, useful facts, and suggestions for what to look for next. Instead of keeping users glued to a chatbot, LifeLens is designed to make the screen the shortest part of the experience—understand what you see, put the phone away, and continue exploring. It is built for hikers, nature lovers, students, travelers, and anyone curious about the world around them

How I Built It

I built LifeLens Outdoor around open-weight AI and computer vision. The camera captures the user's surroundings, and an open vision model analyzes the image to identify species such as plants, birds, trees, and flowers. I designed the AI layer to be modular so models can be swapped, customized, or run locally where supported. The frontend is built with React and TypeScript, with a responsive outdoor-focused interface and a Demo Mode for testing the complete experience. The open approach gives LifeLens more flexibility, privacy, and control than relying entirely on a closed AI API, while helping us move toward offline, on-device species identification.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation matters because LifeLens is designed for the real world, where internet access, privacy, and flexibility can be limited. Using open-weight AI gives us the freedom to swap and customize models, experiment with local inference, and keep visual data closer to the user instead of depending entirely on a closed API. It also makes it possible to optimize the system for specific outdoor use cases like species identification and offline exploration. This flexibility helps us build an AI that is not only smarter, but also more accessible, private, adaptable, and useful outside the screen.

My Agent Session

I did not use a DevRelay agent session for this project.
