👻 GhostAI – Your AI-Powered Outdoor Adventure Companion
Go Outside. Feel Alive.
This is my submission for Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge – Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.
What I Built
GhostAI is an AI-powered outdoor adventure companion designed to encourage people to take meaningful breaks from their screens and reconnect with nature.
We spend so much time looking at screens that we often forget to step outside. I wanted to build something that uses AI not just to increase productivity, but to encourage healthier digital habits.
With GhostAI, users can:
- Choose an outdoor break duration.
- Discover outdoor activity suggestions.
- Use a timer to manage their breaks.
- Save their progress locally.
I interpreted the theme "Ghost in the Machine" as bringing AI into everyday life in a different way: instead of keeping people in front of screens, using technology to motivate them to step away from screens.

How I Built It
I wanted to explore how open-source AI models could power a practical application.
My development stack includes:
- **JavaScript: Application development.
- **Node.js: Backend development.
- **Ollama: Local AI model runtime.
- **Qwen2.5 3B: Open-weight language model experiment.
- **HTML/CSS: User interface.
- **Git and GitHub: Version control and open-source collaboration.
I experimented with running Qwen2.5 3B locally using Ollama, which allows developers to explore AI without depending entirely on paid cloud APIs.
The application combines an outdoor activity experience with a lightweight, accessible interface.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation matters because AI should not be limited to people who can afford expensive APIs or powerful cloud infrastructure.
Using open-weight models such as Qwen2.5 3B and tools like Ollama makes it possible to experiment with AI locally, understand how models work, and build applications with greater control.
For GhostAI, this approach represents an opportunity to:
- Experiment with AI without depending entirely on proprietary APIs.
- Explore local inference and privacy-friendly AI.
- Learn how open-weight models can be integrated into real applications.
- Make AI development more accessible to students and independent developers.
I believe open-source AI gives developers the freedom to experiment, learn, modify, and build solutions that reflect their own ideas.
The Spirit of It
GhostAI has a simple message:
Technology should help us experience life, not distract us from it.
Sometimes the best thing an AI assistant can suggest is not another task, another video, or another hour of screen time.
Sometimes it should simply say:
Go outside. Take a breath. Explore something new.
Built with curiosity, creativity, and open-source AI. ❤️
