Touch 'n Go eWallet (also called dompet digital or e-dompet) is Malaysia's most widely used e-wallet. But even heavy users often do not know their actual wallet limits, what eKYC unlocks, or what to do if they lose their phone.
This is the complete guide.
What is Touch 'n Go eWallet?
TNG eWallet is a mobile app operated by TNG Digital — a joint venture between Touch 'n Go and Ant Group (the company behind Alipay). Available on iOS and Android.
Important distinction: TNG eWallet and the physical TNG card are separate products. Your eWallet balance does not work at most highway toll plazas — for that, you need the physical TNG card or TNG RFID sticker. The eWallet app can reload your physical card, however.
What the eWallet does:
- Pay at merchants via DuitNow QR or TNG QR code
- Pay bills (TNB, Maxis, Celcom, Unifi, water bills, PTPTN, income tax)
- Send money to other TNG users or to bank accounts via DuitNow
- Reload your physical TNG card
- Top up mobile prepaid lines
- Make online purchases via the TNG VISA Virtual Card
- Access GOprotect insurance and GOinvest (verified users only)
How to Register (5 minutes)
Registration is free. You need a Malaysian mobile number and your MyKad number.
Step 1 — Download the official TNG eWallet app from the App Store or Google Play. Publisher: TNG Digital Sdn Bhd. There are fake clones — double-check.
Step 2 — Tap "Register" and verify your mobile number with a 6-digit OTP.
Step 3 — Enter your full name (must match MyKad exactly) and your IC number without dashes.
Step 4 — Set a 6-digit transaction PIN. Avoid obvious combinations.
Step 5 — Set your security phrase (helps you verify genuine TNG communications).
Your account is now active at the Basic Tier: RM200 wallet balance limit, RM500/month transaction limit.
One account per IC number. If you previously registered but forgot your login, use "Forgot PIN" or "Recover Account" — do not create a duplicate account.
How to Top Up
| Method | Fee | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Online Banking (FPX) | Free | Instant |
| Debit/Credit Card | Possible cash advance fee | Instant |
| Physical TNG Card (NFC) | Free | Instant |
| Cash at 7-Eleven / reload points | RM0.50–RM1 | Instant |
Minimum top-up: RM10. Maximum per transaction depends on your KYC tier.
eKYC: How to Verify Your Identity
eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer) takes about 5 minutes and is done entirely in the app. It unlocks significantly higher limits and additional features.
What you need: Physical MyKad (not a photocopy), good lighting, working front camera.
Steps:
- Tap the profile icon → Settings → My Account → eKYC Verification (or tap the "Verify Now" banner)
- Scan the front of your MyKad — hold flat, good light, no glare
- Scan the back of your MyKad
- Take a selfie — look straight ahead, no sunglasses, follow on-screen prompts
- Submit — most approvals are instant, some take up to 1 business day
After eKYC: Wallet limit increases to RM1,500. Monthly transaction limit increases to RM5,000. You unlock bill payments, DuitNow bank transfers, and insurance products.
Do eKYC before you need it. If you do it standing at a cashier trying to pay a RM300 bill, you will be frustrated. Do it when you first install the app.
Wallet Limits & Transaction Limits
Three tiers, set by Bank Negara Malaysia's e-money regulations:
| Tier | Wallet Limit | Monthly Txn Limit | How to Reach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic (no eKYC) | RM200 | RM500 | Register with phone number |
| eKYC Verified | RM1,500 | RM5,000 | Scan MyKad + selfie in-app |
| Full KYC (Enhanced) | RM9,950 | RM9,500+ | Additional ID documents |
BNM regulations cap all e-money wallets in Malaysia at RM9,950 regardless of KYC level.
Paying with TNG eWallet
At merchants (QR code):
- Tap "Pay" on home screen
- Scan the merchant's DuitNow QR or TNG QR code
- Enter amount (if not pre-filled)
- Confirm with your 6-digit PIN
Online purchases: Use the TNG VISA Virtual Card (eKYC required). Available under "My Cards." Works anywhere Visa is accepted online.
Tolls: TNG eWallet works at SMART Tunnel and select parking facilities. For most highway RFID lanes, you still need the physical TNG card or TNG RFID sticker.
Sending Money
To another TNG user: Tap "Transfer" → "TNG eWallet" → enter mobile number → confirm amount → PIN. Free, instant.
To a bank account (DuitNow): eKYC required. Tap "Transfer" → "Bank Transfer" or "DuitNow." Small fee may apply (typically free or RM0.10–RM0.50).
International (GOremit): eKYC required. Available under "More." Exchange rates and fees vary by destination.
Bill Payments
Tap "Bills" in the app. eKYC required. You can pay:
- Electricity: TNB, SESB (Sabah), SESCO (Sarawak)
- Water: Air Selangor, Penang Water, SAJ, SAWACO, Laku
- Telco/Internet: Maxis, Digi, Celcom, U Mobile, Unifi, Time, Yes 4G
- Insurance: AIA, Great Eastern, Takaful Malaysia, Etiqa, Prudential
- Education: PTPTN repayments, selected universities
- Government: LHDN income tax, JPJ road tax, PDRM summons, local council rates
- Credit cards: Selected banks
TNG eWallet vs TNG RFID
| TNG eWallet | TNG RFID | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Mobile app | Windscreen sticker |
| Main use | Merchant payments, bills, transfers | Highway toll lanes (no stopping) |
| Works at highway tolls? | Most lanes: No | All RFID lanes: Yes |
| Cost | Free | RM35 one-time |
Can I link RFID to my eWallet? Yes — go to My Cards → TNG RFID. Toll deductions come from your eWallet balance.
If You Lose Your Phone
Act fast:
- Call TNG customer service immediately: 1-300-888-863 (24 hours) — they can freeze your account without the physical phone
- Install TNG eWallet on another device, log in with your registered number (OTP to your SIM — request your telco to block the SIM if stolen first)
- Change your PIN immediately after logging in on a new device
- File a PDRM police report if the phone was stolen — TNG may require this for transaction disputes
- Review transaction history for unauthorised payments
Anyone with access to your unlocked phone can make payments if biometrics are enabled and the phone is not locked. Set a strong lock screen PIN.
Pro Tips
Enable GoRewards — Free loyalty programme. Every transaction earns points. No setup needed, just activate under "Rewards."
Pay LHDN income tax via TNG — "Bills" → LHDN → use your IC number as reference. Avoids logging into MyTax.
Use TNG VISA Virtual Card online — Instead of exposing your bank debit card to new merchants, use the virtual Visa card (drawn from eWallet balance, Visa fraud protection included).
Require PIN for large transactions — If you have biometrics enabled, set a PIN requirement for transactions above RM100 in security settings.
Check the Promotions tab — TNG regularly runs cashback promotions on top-ups, petrol, groceries. A 10% cashback on a large bill payment is real money.
FAQ
My eKYC keeps failing. What should I do?
Common causes: poor lighting, camera glare on the card, face not matching MyKad photo (sunglasses, hat, heavy makeup). Try in bright natural light. After multiple failures, call 1-300-888-863 for manual verification.
Can I have more than one TNG eWallet account?
No — one account per IC number. Use "Recover Account" if you've forgotten your login.
Can I withdraw money from TNG eWallet to my bank account?
Yes, for eKYC-verified users. Transfer → Bank Transfer. Instant for most banks.
Does TNG eWallet expire?
Account goes dormant after 2 years of inactivity, but your balance is preserved. Reactivate via customer service.
Is my money protected?
TNG is a BNM-licensed e-money issuer. Customer funds are held in a segregated trust account, separate from TNG Digital's operational funds. Not covered by PIDM (deposit insurance), but protected under BNM e-money regulations.
