Patrícia Nunes leads the "Instituto Segunda Chance," offering hope and new beginnings for people and animals in vulnerable situations
Maricá, Brazil – After surviving a severe pulmonary thrombosis that almost permanently damaged part of her lung, Brazilian journalist and founder of the NGO Instituto Segunda Chance, Patrícia Nunes, once again turned her personal experience into a life mission: to offer a second chance to those who need it most.
In the city of Maricá, Rio de Janeiro, Nunes leads the Instituto Segunda Chance, a non-profit organization that promotes actions through the Arca Animal Project, which cares for more than 30 dogs in its shelter, while also running educational campaigns to raise community awareness about animal welfare.
The institute also promotes social actions for people in vulnerable situations, distributing clothes, supplies, and organizing campaigns and events to raise awareness against violence and to promote female self-esteem. One example of these initiatives is “Cá Entre Nós” ("Just Between Us"), which brings together local women to discuss topics such as empowerment, safety, and health.
The organization's participation in prominent events, such as the VII Brazilian Congress on Women in Policing, reinforced its advocacy for gender equality and its commitment to social justice.
“The mission is to show that everyone deserves a new chance — whether it’s a child, a woman fleeing violence, or an abandoned animal,” says Nunes, whose resilience has become an inspiration to many in Brazil.
Despite health challenges, the president of the organization remains at the forefront of these initiatives, combining journalistic integrity with community activism. “We don’t just help with donations and clothes — we restore dignity and hope,” she affirms.
With growing recognition throughout Brazil, Instituto Segunda Chance is now seeking international partnerships to expand its impact. The organization invites supporters from around the world to join its mission of compassion through volunteering, donations, and knowledge exchange.
