Aluminum usually wins at the register. Timber often looks better in a showroom. The numbers change once the windows are exposed to weather, cleaned, repainted, repaired, and eventually replaced. That long arc is where the real cost difference lives.
A homeowner who focuses only on purchase price can end up comparing the wrong thing. A cheaper frame that needs regular refinishing may cost far more than a higher-priced frame that stays stable for decades. The question is not which material is cheaper today. The question is which one asks less from your wallet, your calendar, and your tolerance for upkeep over the life of the house.
Timber Carries a Built-In Maintenance Bill
Timber windows are not expensive only because of the wood itself. They are expensive because wood is active. It moves with moisture, reacts to UV, and depends on coatings to stay protected. That creates a recurring maintenance cycle that never really stops.
In a typical home, exterior timber frames need:

- regular inspection for peeling paint, failed seals, and early rot

Aluminum Has a Much Lower Maintenance Floor
Aluminum works differently. Once the frame leaves the factory with a powder-coated or anodized finish, the protective layer is already doing most of the work. Routine care is usually limited to cleaning with warm water, a soft cloth, and mild detergent.
That is the core of aluminum’s cost advantage. It does not need the same recurring coating cycle that timber does. It does not need sanding. It does not need priming. It does not need the kind of structural attention that rotting wood eventually demands.
A quality aluminum frame may still need the occasional seal replacement or hardware adjustment over the long term, but those costs are intermittent rather than cyclical. They do not stack up in the same predictable way as timber repainting.
That difference matters most when the house is older. A frame that still functions after 20 years without major refinishing is fundamentally cheaper to own than a frame that demands repainting every few years just to stay intact.
The Maintenance Gap Becomes Obvious Over Time
The long-term cost spread is easier to understand when it is separated into phases.
Over the first 10 years
Timber may still feel manageable. The frame is new, the finish is intact, and only one repaint cycle may be due. Aluminum is already ahead, but the gap is not yet dramatic.
Over 20 years
The difference starts to compound. Timber is now likely on its third or fourth maintenance cycle, while aluminum is still mostly asking for cleaning and occasional checks. Any skipped timber maintenance at this stage can trigger repairs that are much more expensive than a normal repaint.
Over 30 years
This is where the comparison stops being close. Typical long-term figures often place aluminum in the range of about $1,050 to $1,700 per window across supply, installation, and limited maintenance. Timber commonly lands around $3,400 to $5,150 per window once higher upfront cost and repeated repainting are included.
That is a difference of roughly $2,300 to $3,400 per window over three decades.
On a 15-window home, the gap can reach the tens of thousands. Even before any major timber repairs or early replacement risk is added, the lifetime cost difference can approach the price of another major renovation item.
The point is not that every timber frame will hit the top of that range. The point is that the cost curve for timber keeps rising while aluminum’s remains comparatively flat.

Why the Gap Widens Faster in Real Homes

A well-maintained timber window can perform well. The problem is handoffs. When a house changes owners, maintenance schedules often slip. One missed repaint cycle can lead to swollen joinery, failing seals, and rot that is far more expensive than a routine coat of paint.
That is one reason timber’s theoretical lifespan can look good on paper while its real-world cost remains high. A frame that depends on disciplined upkeep is only economical when that upkeep actually happens.
The Hidden Cost Is Not Just Money

Timber maintenance creates planning friction. It requires drying time, weather windows, and multiple site visits. It can disrupt occupants. It often means moving furniture, covering floors, and living around the work.

Timber Only Makes Sense When Something Else Matters More
Timber can still be the right choice, but the reason is usually not cost. It may be the best answer for heritage work, a specific architectural style, or a homeowner who values natural material and is willing to maintain it carefully.
That is a design decision, not a cheapness decision.
If the goal is pure budget efficiency, the maintenance math usually favors aluminum. Timber can justify its premium when appearance, tradition, or resale presentation matter more than long-term operating cost. But once the frame must earn its keep over decades, the repainting cycle becomes hard to ignore.
The Better Question to Ask Any Supplier
The starting question is rarely "What does the window cost?" The more useful question is:
- How often will it need repainting or refinishing?
- What does that maintenance cost per cycle?
- How much labor or access equipment will be required?
- What happens if maintenance is delayed for a year or two?
- Will the frame still be functional after 20 to 30 years without major restoration?
Those questions expose the real cost structure.
A quote that looks cheaper upfront can become expensive through repetition. Aluminum usually stays ahead because it does not force the same recurring maintenance budget onto the homeowner. Timber can still be a beautiful choice, but beauty is not the same thing as low cost.
