When people compare double glazed aluminum window suppliers, the first question is usually about the glass: How thick is it? Is it argon-filled? Is there a low-E coating? Those questions matter, but they stop too early. A window is a system, not a pane. The glass, spacer, frame, seal, and installation all decide what the room actually experiences.
A low-U-value IGU can still underperform if it sits in a conductive frame or is installed with sloppy tolerances. The glass may cover most of the visible area, but the perimeter often drives a disproportionate share of heat loss, condensation, and drafts.
For anyone comparing double glazed aluminum window suppliers, the most useful question is simple: can the supplier explain the whole window, not just the pane?
Why glass-only specs are incomplete
Center-of-glass numbers are useful, but they describe one zone only: the middle of the IGU, away from the frame edge. That is the easiest place for a product to look good. Once the frame, spacer, and edge seal are counted, the performance changes.
That gap can be large. A glass package that looks like a 1.4 W/m²K solution on paper may behave more like a 2.3 or 2.8 W/m²K window once the full assembly is measured. In a non-thermally-broken aluminum frame, the edge penalty can be even more obvious.
Raw aluminum is an efficient heat conductor. Polyamide thermal barriers are not. Aluminum's conductivity is roughly 237 W/mK, while polyamide sits near 0.3 W/mK. That difference is why a thermally broken frame performs so differently from a plain metal profile.
The perimeter is where comfort is lost
The weakest part of a window is often the border where the glass meets the frame. That is where warm-edge spacers, sealant, and gas retention matter most.
A basic aluminum spacer moves heat quickly and makes the inside edge colder. A warm-edge spacer reduces that bridge and lowers condensation risk. In practical terms, warm-edge spacers can reduce edge heat transfer by roughly 30% compared with basic metal spacers. In winter, that can be the difference between a dry room and a sash that beads water every morning.
Seal quality matters for the same reason. If the IGU seal fails, moisture enters the cavity, the unit fogs, and the insulating gas escapes. The window may still look intact from the outside, but the performance you paid for is already slipping.
Installation can undo good engineering just as fast. Oversized gaps, poor shimming, and weak perimeter sealing create air leakage that no glass spec can fix. The result feels like a drafty room even when the brochure promised high thermal efficiency.
Small windows expose the truth faster
The frame-to-glass ratio changes with size. On a 24 x 24 inch bathroom window or a laundry window, the frame occupies a much larger share of the assembly than on a floor-to-ceiling fixed lite. That means the whole-window rating drifts farther away from the glass-only number.
This is why a compact window with a premium IGU can still feel cold in winter. The glass may be strong, but the perimeter is doing a lot of the damage. In a home with many small openings, that effect repeats across every room.
Large sliders and bi-folds create a different problem. Their moving parts and longer seals can increase air infiltration if the system is not built and adjusted carefully. In a windy coastal site, leakage can matter more to comfort than a small difference in U-value. The room may not feel cold at the glass edge, but it can still leak comfort through the frame lines and meeting stiles.
What to ask a supplier before trusting the numbers
The right supplier should be able to answer questions about the full system without sounding defensive or vague. Ask for:
- whole-window U-value, not just center-of-glass
- SHGC for the exact glazing package
- air infiltration results for the tested configuration
- frame depth and maximum IGU thickness
- spacer type and thermal break details
- test reports tied to the actual product size
- independent rating or compliance data, such as AS 2047 documentation
If the answer stops at glass thickness, the quote is incomplete.
If a supplier can explain how the frame profile, spacer, and glazing cavity work together, the product is probably engineered as a system. If they only talk about the pane, the room is likely to pay for that shortcut later in comfort and energy use.
Why the same glass can perform differently in two homes
A west-facing living room in a hot climate does not need the same balance as a shaded bedroom in a cold one. But even before climate enters the picture, the window assembly itself changes the result.
One home may have a thermally broken frame with a warm-edge spacer and tight installation tolerances. Another may use the same basic glass in a standard aluminum profile with a weaker seal package. The visible glass looks identical. The room conditions do not.
That difference shows up in the first cold snap or heatwave. The homeowner notices it as condensation, uneven temperatures near the window, or a higher-than-expected HVAC bill. By then, the mistake is already built into the wall.
The simplest rule for reading supplier claims
Treat center-of-glass data as component information, not proof of window performance. Useful, yes. Complete, no.
The metric that matters is the whole assembly:
- glass package
- spacer system
- frame design
- thermal break
- seals
- installation quality
A supplier that can document all six is selling a window. A supplier that only documents the glass is selling part of one.
The point most buyers miss
The real value in double glazing is not the presence of two panes. It is the way the full assembly slows heat flow, controls condensation, and resists air leakage as one coordinated system.
That is why the best sales conversation is not about how impressive the glass sounds. It is about whether the total window has been engineered to perform in the space where it will actually live.
A brochure can make a pane look excellent. Only the full window tells the truth.
