More of your traffic now starts in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews instead of a list of blue links. Getting your product named in those answers is called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Most of it is plain engineering work.
1. Let AI crawlers in
Check robots.txt. Many sites block GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended by accident through a broad disallow rule. If they cannot crawl you, they cannot cite you.
2. Ship content in the HTML
Client-only rendering is still risky. Make sure the main content, headings and links exist in the server response.
3. Add structured data
Organization, SoftwareApplication, FAQPage and Article JSON-LD give engines clean facts about who you are and what you offer.
4. Write answer-first pages
Put a direct answer to one clear question at the top of each page, then go deeper. Short definitions, steps and comparisons get quoted the most.
5. Add an llms.txt
A small /llms.txt file that lists your key pages helps AI agents find the right content fast.
6. Measure it
Pick 20 to 50 prompts your users actually ask and track which engines mention you over time.
Automating the loop
I'm building Raechal AI to do this end to end: it audits a site, fixes technical issues, writes missing content, publishes to the CMS and tracks citations across Google, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. There is a free plan if you want to try it on your own site.
The full checklist is open source on GitHub: geo-checklist.
