As stated earlier, it’s not one above the other but rather what fits me. And if you are an anime creator, OC artist, VTuber, manga writer, or just someone who genuinely enjoys creating amazing anime from text, this is software that would fit you.
ComfyUI
On the other hand, we have ComfyUI, an open-source software that you can host completely independently. You can run it on your own servers; however, that would require a dedicated system powerful enough to be able to handle it.
To run it comfortably, you would need a system with a dedicated GPU with at least 8GB of VRAM, 16GB of system RAM, and about 10GB to 50GB+ of free disk space, depending on your model collection. However, for a recommended system requirement for a lag-free, effortless experience, you would be better off with 12GB–16GB+ VRAM, especially for advanced models like SDXL, Flux, or video generation, and 32GB system RAM is preferred.
You can also host it on external servers or the cloud, but the cost would be substantial.
Alternatively, there is also a web-based version that’s usually only called Comfy. Again, this isn’t free; the Standard plan costs up to $20 USD per month and unlocks up to 4,200 credits. Although the usage of credits depends mostly on your settings, such an amount, according to the official website, is enough to generate up to 380 5-second videos. The plans are different, and prices differ depending on the plan, whether you play monthly or yearly, and whether it is for teams or individuals.
However, please note that ComfyUI is not for anime, even though there are user made specialized checkpoints like Pony Diffusion or NovelAI styles, combined with anime LoRAs, they could be used for anime style creation but using specifically ComfyUI for anime is a no-no. Because there are rather specialized software like PixAI that could do a better job at it.
Getting Started and Setting Up a Workflow
Let’s begin from the beginning. I mean, getting started and setting up a workflow.
Complex setups make users quit before even trying the product. First impressions matter, and a smooth start keeps users coming back. In software design, this concept is called Time-to-Value (TTV).
ComfyUI
Starting with ComfyUI, first and foremost, you must install the software from the official website.
After completing the installation process, you are asked for how you want to run your setup. Considering the cost associated and the system requirements, choose one and continue.
Afterwards, you are asked to choose the destination where you need it installed. Once done, before you know it, you are one the getting started tab. Choose the model and generation type, and you are in, ready to fire the creativity away.

PixAI
Getting started with PixAI is rather simple and easy, comparatively. As stated, this is a web-based software; hence, the entire downloading and installation process could be skipped. Thus, simply hop on to Pixai.art.
Create your account.
The next thing you know, you are right in the middle of PixAI.
You’ll land on the Home tab. Switch to the Studio tab, market as “NEW,” and click Open PixAI Studio.
And you are in, ready to start working. Unlike ComfyUI, you get a completely blank canvas here. You can add your nodes by tapping the Add Note button at the bottom and choose the type of node you want to add.
If you don’t wish to start everything from scratch, there is a template button.
Click the button and choose from the hundreds of them with a single click.
Building and Customizing Node-Based Workflows
We just saw how easy it is to start a workflow with both of our contestants.
But, is it as easy to build and customize it…?
ComfyUI
Adding a node — a functional building block that takes an input, does a specific task like processing data or running a model, and passes an output forward — is just a drag and drop process. Head over to the Node Library and drag the node into the workflow.
Connect it by dragging the link from one node to another.
Adding a model is nothing different; just head over to the Model Library and select the model to use with the “Use” button.
Or you can simply import a new one that you download from an external source. Given that ComfyUI is open-source software and models are user made, there are thousands of them to choose from.
The granularity of the software is evident from the parameters: you have a negative prompt, a seed to adjust noise, sampling steps, CFG or guidance scale that determines how closely AI should follow your prompt, noise cleaning mathematical algorithms, dimensions to set the size freely, and the list goes on and on.
However, this extensive control for every tiny detail backfires for beginners. The flexibility for amateurs becomes complexity for beginners. Since you control every single node, wire, math parameter, custom script, you have to manually connect every component, troubleshoot problems, and understand backend AI technicalities just to run a generation. So, ComfyUI for beginners is another no-no, unless you are planning on mastering it.
PixAI
On the opposite end of the road, we have PixAI. Instead of low-level technical nodes, PixAI uses higher-level assets, such as text, image, video, or audio nodes that are interconnected to create a complete workflow.
Unlike Comfy or ComfyUI, you are welcomed by a completely bland, empty canvas. And you must create the entire workflow manually or use a template.
For example, I added the text and a video node.
I can connect the two nodes by dragging the link from one node to another, exactly how it’s done in ComfyUI.
One of the biggest positives of this interface and software, generally, is the high readability and ease of use. It starts with a blank canvas and isn't intimidating to look at, especially when you are a complete beginner. You can swap models, apply ready-made templates, and chain generation, editing, and animation in one clean workspace in a visual interface without having to manage a million lines of code.
In terms of technical customization, it isn’t as intricate or granular as compared to ComfyUI which also can be a good thing especially for those who do not like to play with a million parameters before generating an image of a volleyball on a beach.
And of course, there are templates. For when you don’t want to build the entire workflow from scratch.
Models, Existing Assets, and Anime Creation
An empty canvas and intuitive controls don't mean much if managing your art assets feels complicated. For anime creators and manga artists, the way a platform manages models, LoRAs, and how consistent a character remains throughout is a bigger problem.
So, let’s evaluate the two considering that.
To maintain character consistency, image generators must have a “reference” to the image since AI image generators create each image from scratch and do not have a “memory” like traditional chatbots.
To add a reference image in ComfyUI, you must upload the image through the Load Image node and connect the node to the image generation node.
However, users argue on popular forums like Reddit, that ultra realistic character styles sometimes lack either consistency or realism. The obstacle could be overcome by training your own loRA, for which you would need to install a training-focused custom node toolkit like ComfyUI Realtime LoRA Toolkit or Lora-Training-in-Comfy.
Moreover, as already established, it isn’t the software’s first interest to deal with anime-style generations; hence to generate actually impressive anime-type images, using dedicated models and LoRAs is a must.
The same isn’t the case with PixAI, which specializes in anime-style generations. To add a reference image, just upload the image, or you can import from PixAI.
Create a new image node, choose model and LoRA.
Adjust the slider to maintain LoRA weight.
And click “Ref,” short for the reference button. Doing so would hand you the link, which you can drag around and connect to the node you wish to add as a reference. Once done, PixAI would ensure to refer to the added image before every generation, enhancing accuracy and consistency.
Since AI generation extends beyond just image generation, it’s imperative that we test the video creation process as well.
Coming back to ComfyUI, video creation is a completely distinct process that requires loading a completely separate workflow. This is a little intricate process especially for beginners, but again, which is a positive feature considering the fact that the precise controls or the granularity births complexity.
First you need to load a dedicated text-to-video editor, such as Wan 2.2, LTC-2.3, AnimateDiff, or any of your choice.
Connect it to a preview node and then a video saver.
The process does seems easy except for someone who might not be familiar with node-based AI image or video generators. In that case, all it takes is a little research and you are right there on the track.

Since PixAI is a beginner-friendly AI workflow, the video creation seemed easier because you don’t have to look up specific models, templates, loRAs, and nodes. Simply open a video node and connect it to the reference images.

As established that numerous users and readers of this article are occasional users who rather just hop on to the, generate a few images and hop off without hyper-fixation about all the features. For such people, I think it’s fair to see how both software handle anime-styled AI image generation.
Let’s use a similar kind of prompt for the both of them to see how they handle anime. The prompt we will use:

Again, setting up Comfy can be a little time-consuming at the beginning but once you get the hold of it’s simpler. Drag the dedicated anime art creation tool, I used Anima Base 1.0, dragged the positive and negative prompt helper, and a destination node like “Save Image node.”
