Five Startling Facts About the World's Largest Data Center

A video is streamed. You send a message by email. You pose a query to an AI. All of this takes place in a matter of seconds, but you never consider the actual location. It takes place at a data center.

The globe is currently constructing data centers on an unprecedented scale. These installations cost billions of dollars to construct and consume as much electricity as entire cities. Most people are unaware of how quickly the competition to construct the largest data center in the world is progressing. Here are five startling facts about what's actually happening inside.

Fact 1: Enough electricity is used by the world's largest data center to power 1.6 million homes.

One of the largest data centers in the world is AWS Project Rainier, located near New Carlisle, Indiana. More than 1.6 million houses might be powered by the 2.2 gigawatts of electricity it will consume at full capacity. On 1,200 acres of former farmland, Amazon invested $11 billion to construct it.

The first structures were operational within seven months after construction began in September 2024. For a project of large, that is among the quickest build times ever. Thirty structures totalling more than 200,000 square feet will eventually occupy the entire complex.

Fact 2: Inside the World's Largest Data Center

A data center is typically thought of as a large room filled with computers. It goes well beyond that. Power, cooling, and networking are the three systems that keep a data center running.

The real computing is done by servers. They are arranged in large metal frames known as racks and operate continuously. The data center's floor is lined with thousands of these racks.

Power systems ensure uninterrupted operation. Despite receiving electricity from the local grid, the largest data center in the world cannot afford even a single second of outage. Therefore, in the event that the primary supply fails, backup generators and battery systems are prepared to take over right away.

Fact 3: The world's largest data center cluster is located in China.

The US is not home to the largest data center in the world in terms of both overall size and cluster. It is located in China's Inner Mongolia. All of the major Chinese IT companies have constructed massive data centers in the Hohhot area.

The explanation is straightforward: the area experiences extremely cold temperatures, which drastically reduces cooling expenses. Additionally, it boasts inexpensive electricity and robust government backing thanks to Beijing's "East Data, West Computing" initiative, which aggressively encourages tech firms to establish themselves in this area.
