I’ve been building my own digital marketing website this semester as part of a college class, and honestly, it’s been one of the most helpful ways to learn SEO in real time. Instead of just reading about ranking factors or content strategy, I’m testing everything on my own site and seeing what actually works.
I’m using the project to study topics such as on-site SEO, off-site SEO, keyword research, and how AI tools change how content is discovered. Since everything I post is based on what I’m learning at school, it doubles as a portfolio piece and a way to practice fundamental skills.
One of the biggest surprises has been how much internal structure matters. Simple things like organizing pages, improving readability, tightening meta descriptions, and adding helpful images make a huge difference. I’ve also learned how backlinks work, why they matter, and how to create them without coming across as spammy. That’s a skill I definitely didn’t expect to pick up this fast.
I’m also testing how my content performs on different platforms. Publishing posts on sites like Medium, Substack, Tumblr, Pinterest, and others lets me see which audiences engage with what types of content. It’s been cool to compare traffic patterns and see what posts get picked up by search engines or recommended feeds.
If you want to check out the project I’m working on, here’s the website I’ve been building for class. I’m using it as a place to share what I learn about SEO and digital marketing:
ramsmarketing.org
I’ll keep updating it as I experiment with new tools and strategies. If you’re a student working on something similar or someone who enjoys marketing topics, I’d love any feedback or ideas!
