A KDP paperback cover is one flat PDF: back cover, spine, front cover, plus bleed. The only number you cannot guess is the spine width, because it depends on page count and paper. Get it wrong and the title wraps onto the wrong side of the fold.
KDP publishes the formula on its cover help page (https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201953020). For black-and-white interiors:
| Paper | Spine width |
|---|---|
| White | page count x 0.002252 in |
| Cream | page count x 0.0025 in |
The full cover size is:
- width = bleed + back cover + spine + front cover + bleed
- height = bleed + trim height + bleed
Bleed is 0.125 in on the top, bottom and outside edges.
The calculator
# KDP paperback cover size calculator (black-and-white interiors)
PER_PAGE = {"white": 0.002252, "cream": 0.0025} # inches per page
BLEED = 0.125 # inches
def cover_size(trim_w, trim_h, pages, paper="cream"):
spine = pages * PER_PAGE[paper]
width = BLEED + trim_w + spine + trim_w + BLEED
height = BLEED + trim_h + BLEED
return round(spine, 4), round(width, 4), round(height, 4)
if __name__ == "__main__":
for pages, paper in [(79, "cream"), (200, "cream"), (200, "white"), (320, "cream")]:
s, w, h = cover_size(5.5, 8.25, pages, paper)
print(f"{pages:>3} pages, {paper:<5}: spine {s:.4f} in | full cover {w:.4f} x {h:.4f} in")
Output for a 5.5 x 8.25 in trim:
79 pages, cream: spine 0.1975 in | full cover 11.4475 x 8.5000 in
200 pages, cream: spine 0.5000 in | full cover 11.7500 x 8.5000 in
200 pages, white: spine 0.4504 in | full cover 11.7004 x 8.5000 in
320 pages, cream: spine 0.8000 in | full cover 12.0500 x 8.5000 in
The same 200-page book is about 0.05 in wider on cream than on white. That is small, but spine text has to sit at least 0.0625 in from each fold, and KDP asks you to allow 0.0625 in of variance on either side of the fold, so a few hundredths of an inch matters.
Things to check by hand
- Spine text minimum. KDP's help page says spine text needs at least 79 pages in one place and more than 79 in another. Treat 80 pages as the safe floor.
- Page count changes. If editing adds or removes pages, recompute the spine before you export the cover.
- Rounding. KDP rounds the page count up to an even number, so use the even count for the spine.
- KDP also has its own cover calculator and template generator. Use it to check this script's output, not the other way round.
If you would rather not do this by hand
BookTemplatesPro (https://www.booktemplatespro.com/) sells LaTeX book and cover templates for independent authors, from $29 for one design, with sample PDFs. Its guides page (https://www.booktemplatespro.com/guides) lists a post on cream versus white paper and spine width math. I did not test their templates or read that guide closely, so check the samples yourself.
Whatever tool you use, compare its spine width with the formula above before you upload a cover.
