Kottu Roti Might Be Toronto's Most Underrated Street Food

If you've walked past a Sri Lankan spot and heard a rhythmic clang-clang-clang from the kitchen, that was kottu roti being made, and you should probably go back.

Kottu (sometimes spelled kothu) is chopped-up flatbread stir-fried on a flat-top griddle with egg, vegetables, spices, and your choice of meat. Two metal blades chop and toss everything together, and that sound is the dish. It started as a way to use up leftover godhamba roti and became one of the best street foods anywhere.

A few things that make it great:

  • Texture: the roti crisps at the edges but stays chewy, and the egg binds it all together.
  • It's a full meal: carbs, protein and veg in one bowl, no sides needed.
  • Customizable heat: order it mild or order it to genuinely hurt you. Both valid.

If you're in Toronto and want the real thing (cooked to order, not reheated), the east end is where to look. One family-run spot doing proper halal Sri Lankan is Blessed Kitchen in Scarborough, which serves kottu alongside biryani, lamprais and hoppers.

Order it fresh, eat it fast, thank me later.
