Although you're right to point out that the purpose of televisions can be used to sell things, I'd argue that that's the explicit purpose of televisions in the first place, to sell and be sold themselves. All I mean to say is that I think we mustn't forget that the development of technology is subordinate to the social forms under which said technology is created.
