Many people think that the key to success is discipline.
“If I have strong willpower, I can do anything”--- this idea is very common.
But the reality is a little different and this is where the real reality hides.
The first truth is discipline limited, environment continuous.
Your willpower does not remain at the same level throughout the day. But the environment around you always influences you.
The second problem is willpower fatigue.
At the beginning of the day, you are motivated, but gradually your brain gets tired to make decisions. Then the environment starts to control your behavior.
The third truth is the automatic behavior system.
The brain starts to follow the pattern of the environment you are in.
For example, distraction becomes natural if you have a phone nearby, and focus is easier if you have a place to study.
The fourth truth is identity shaping.
The people, content, and routine around you shape your mindset.
You don’t just choose habits, habits are also chosen for you by environment.
Another important point is that discipline helps you get started, but environment keeps you going.
Now I understand the real reality.
No matter how much you say “I will stay focused”,
if your environment is distraction-heavy, then it will always be difficult to fight.
Because the brain wants to reduce resistance.
And if the environment gives you an easy option, the brain chooses that.
So successful people don’t just improve their discipline,
they design the environment.
Now the simple truth:
discipline is effort,
environment is system.
And the system is always stronger than effort.
The last thing is very clear.
You keep failing because you are not weak,
you are just trying to be strong in the wrong environment.
Because in the end,
discipline gets you started,
but the environment shapes you.
For further actions, you may consider blocking this person and/or reporting abuse
