## Devlog: Building a Full-Featured Mobile Video Editor in React 🎬 (Record, Reorder & Transitions)

Mobile video editing usually comes with a massive compromise: you either build a lightweight client that pushes heavy rendering to a cloud server, or you fight hardware constraints to keep everything local.
With AetherCut, we chose the hard way. We refuse cloud uploads. Instead, we leverage advanced web APIs to execute everything on-device.
We are excited to launch our massive Mobile Editor Upgrade, bringing native camera recording, precise on-device clip reordering, and highly customizable frame-by-frame transitionsβ€”all running seamlessly inside a React architecture completely client-side.

Here is a breakdown of what’s new, how it works, and the engineering behind it.

πŸ“½οΈ Native Recording & Dual-Handle Trimming

You no longer need to jump between your native device camera and AetherCut.

  • In-App Capture: Record clips directly inside the app using either your front or rear camera.
  • Precision Trimming: Every captured clip can be immediately trimmed using a brand-new dual-handle slider UI, letting you isolate the perfect frames in seconds.

πŸ”€ Local Reel Assembly & Drag-and-Drop Reordering

Privacy and speed are core to AetherCut. You can now join multiple clips into a single reel entirely on-device. Your raw footage is never uploaded to a server. This means zero bandwidth drain, instant rendering, and verifiable privacy.
To manage your timeline, I've engineered an intuitive clip tab system:

  • Visual Anchors: Each clip tab now dynamically displays a first-frame thumbnail for easy recognition.
  • Flexible Reordering: Rearrange your timeline by long-press dragging the clip tabs, or use the precision β—€ β–Ά arrows.
  • Safety Net: Made a mistake? A one-tap Undo instantly reverts your last timeline shift.

πŸ”„ Granular, Animated Video Transitions

Instead of applying a blanket, global effect to your entire video, this update introduces per-boundary transition controls. You can target the exact moment two clips meet and customize the experience frame-by-frame.

1. Transition Types

  • Hard Cut: Instant, crisp scene changes.
  • Crossfade: Smooth, alpha-blended opacity shifts.
  • Slide (Push): One clip physically pushes the other out of the frame.
  • Wipe: A clean geometric sweep across the viewport.

2. Deep Customization & Smart Defaults

  • Directional Control: For Slide and Wipe transitions, you can specify the movement vector (Left, Right, Up, or Down).
  • Precise Timing: Fine-tune the pacing with a per-transition duration slider ranging from 0.2 seconds to 1.0 second.
  • Smart Memory: AetherCut now remembers your favorite transition style and automatically suggests it for your next boundary.

3. UI/UX Polish: Animated Previews

We wanted to eliminate guesswork. The transition selection buttons feature live animated previews, allowing you to choose your visual style by sight before applying it to the timeline.

πŸš€ Smoother Onboarding & Feedback

To make sure you don't miss a single feature, this release includes an interactive first-use tour that guides you through the new layout.

Because Android and mobile web environments vary wildly across devices, we want to capture edge cases immediately. If something doesn't feel right, we’ve embedded a one-tap bug-report nudge directly into the onboarding experience, making it easier than ever to send us diagnostic feedback.

πŸ› οΈ Under the Hood (For the Devs)

Keeping video stitching and transitional rendering 100% on-device required a deep dive into optimizing mobile hardware acceleration. Managing state and rendering smoothly when handling multiple concurrent high-definition video assets on a phone is no jokeβ€”especially when calculating real-time directional slide and wipe matrices.
By pairing React's component state with performance-optimized underlying APIs like WebCodecs and MediaRecorder, we route the video heavy lifting straight to your device's own GPU. This completely bypasses the 30-90 second upload/download lag forced by cloud-based editors. Open your browser DevTools while editingβ€”you'll see zero outbound video data.
