The open-weights world is about to get a lot heavier. Mistral has confirmed that Large 4 — a natively multimodal mixture-of-experts model with around one trillion parameters, of which roughly 52 billion are active per token — will be released with open weights before the end of October 2026.
That is a remarkable moment for open AI. A trillion-parameter model you can download and run yourself (well, if you have the hardware) changes the conversation about what "open" can mean at the frontier.
What makes Large 4 different
A few things stand out:
- Scale with efficiency. The MoE design means only a fraction of the parameters fire on any given token, so inference costs stay sane. Mistral prices API access at about $0.70 per million input tokens and $2.10 per million output tokens — aggressive for a flagship.
- Trained in Europe, on European iron. The run used some 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's own datacenters — a statement about sovereign AI capacity as much as engineering.
- Built for work, not demos. Mistral is positioning it around coding (with strong showings on DeepSWE 1.1 and Terminal-Bench 4.0), agentic workflows, and even cybersecurity evaluation via the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index.
Why open weights matter here
When a frontier-class model ships with open weights, researchers can audit it, startups can fine-tune it without API rent, and regions without hyperscaler access get a real foundation to build on. It also puts pressure on closed labs to justify their moats.
There are real debates ahead — safety evaluations at this scale, the compute needed to run it, and what "open" licensing actually permits. But the direction is clear: the gap between what you can rent and what you can own keeps shrinking.
